Synod Staff Receive Awards

On June 25th, Lutheran Services of Georgia (LSG) hosted its Volunteer Appreciation Evening at the Atlanta Community Foodbank, Atlanta, GA.  Southeastern Synod staff members Ms. Abby Koning and the Rev. Darrel Peterson both received awards for their volunteer service.

Ms. Koning was recognized for her outstanding volunteer work through LSG's Friends in Hope Detention Visitation Ministry with a Hands of Hope, Healing and Strength volunteer award. She made multiple visits to detainees in Stewart Detention Center (SDC), Lumpkin, GA, throughout the year, volunteered as a weekend host for LSG's partner in detention ministry, the El Refugio hospitality house for friends and family visiting detainees at SDC, participated in prayer vigils outside both the SDC and the North Georgia Detention Center in Gainesville, GA, and joined the Holy Week Pilgrimage for Immigrants on Palm Sunday and Good Friday.  In addition, Ms. Koning wrote a moving account of her first detention visit for the LSG blog called Borderless Welcome, Boundless Love.  She serves as the Lutheran Volunteer Corps Intern on the Southeastern Synod staff.

The Rev. Darrel Peterson was recognized last night as Lutheran Services of Georgia's Outstanding Partner in Welcome for his inspiration and collaboration with LSG Refugee Services for the When Strangers Become Neighbors conference in April 2013 to help congregations deepen the conversation about what it means to "welcome the stranger" and "love the neighbor."  The Rev. Peterson serves as an Assistant to the Bishop in the Southeastern Synod.

Congratulations to both Ms. Koning and the Rev. Peterson for these accolades.  We give thanks to God for their witness to the gospel and for their service in our synod!

Submit a Short Video for this Summer's ELCA Churchwide Assembly

The theme for the 2013 Churchwide Assembly is "Always
Being Made New". Congregations are invited to submit short videos that showcase their ministries living out that theme. In 60-90 second videos, congregations should share what the theme "deeply rooted in faith, and always being made new" means to them and how they live out that statement in their continuing work.

Congregations may also wish to consider and address these related questions:
  • In a rapidly changing culture, where is God leading and calling us as the ELCA?
  • Where are we "showing up" as a church in your community?
Videos should be completed and available for posting to YouTube by June 30Contact Janice Rizzo via email or at 800-638-3522, ext. 2949 for more submission information.

Baumgartner Receives LTSS Bedenbaugh Award

The Rev. Dr. Paul W. Baumgartner was recently named the 2013 Recipient of the John Benjamin Bedenbaugh Award for Distinguished Pastoral Leadership. The award is granted by the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (LTSS). Baumgartner is a 1981 graduate of LTSS.

Pastor Paul Baumgartner has served as Senior Pastor of Good Shepherd in Woodstock, Georgia since January 2004. Prior to that, he served congregations in Wilmington Island, GA, Chattanooga, TN, and Georgetown, SC.  He was ordained in 1981 after earning a master of divinity degree from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. He earned the doctor of ministry degree from The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia in 2001. As a missional leader, Pr. Baumgartner serves as the chief administrator and staff supervisor of the congregation so that it might fulfill its mission and purpose as the body of Christ. His service to the Southeastern Synod includes service as secretary, conference chair and dean. He twice represented the Synod as a voting member of the ELCA Churchwide Assembly. He currently serves on the Southeastern Synod Candidacy Committee.

In his letter of nomination, Bishop H. Julian Gordy wrote, "Under [Pr. Baumgartner's] leadership, congregations have grown in numbers, discipleship, and understanding of Christ's Church's mission in the world."

The Bedenbaugh Award is given annually to a distinguished graduate of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary who has encouraged bold congregational witness and has offered exemplary service to the church at large. The award bears the name of the late Rev. Dr. John Benjamin Bedenbaugh, who was a professor and alumnus of the seminary. In recognition of this award, Pr. Baumgartner was presented with the Bedenbaugh honorary stole, given each year to the award's recipient, and a certificate commemorating the award.

Congratulations, Pr. Baumgartner!

Looking for something to do this evening?  St. John's Lutheran Church (1410 Ponce de Leon Ave, NE, Atlanta, GA) invites you to join them on Wednesday, June 26, from 7-9 pm for a screening and discussion of A Place at the Table, a film about hunger in America.

Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation's decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. Attendees will have the opportunity to contribute to BFTW's Offering of Letters, an annual campaign to write congressional representatives asking them to support food and farm policies to end hunger in the United States and abroad.

This event is FREE and open to the public. Please consider bringing a contribution of peanut butter/jelly or pasta/pasta sauce to benefit the Intown Food Pantry, a weekly pantry which serves the food insecure in the 30306 or 30307 zip codes.

This event is sponsored by St. John's Lutheran Church, Mercy Community Church, and Intown Collaborative Ministries. For more information: aschmidt@bellsouth.net
Everywhere Fun Fair at St. Andrew, Franklin, TN

St Andrew's (Franklin, TN) 2013 Vacation Bible School was great fun for everyone! This year's theme was "Everywhere Fun Fair, where God's world comes together." We purchased the curriculum through Cokesbury and incorporated the lessons to fit our needs. We learned how God's love is for everyone, and how God wants us to love and care for our neighbors everywhere!

Each day, we traveled to a different country, learned a little about the culture, and participated in themed bible stories. After dinner on Sunday, we traveled to Japan and learned that neighbors are friendly. We incorporated the bible story into the evening event, along with an inter-generational art project that each family was able to take home with them.

We met from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon on Monday through Thursday. On Monday, we traveled to Zimbabwe and discovered that neighbors are giving, and that God loves a cheerful giver. On Tuesday, we traveled to the United Kingdom and learned that neighbors are bold. We studied Matthew 25:35. On Wednesday, our travels brought us to Australia, where we realized that neighbors are forgiving. In Mexico, our final destination, we learned that God welcomes everyone from everywhere.

On Thursday evening, we ended the VBS week with a cookout celebration for the students and their families. The kids shared their experiences and sang some of the songs. Together, we viewed an I-Movie presentation of photos that were taken during the week.

Each day, the students participated in bible story, crafts, games, music, discovery time, and snacks. We also incorporated two mission projects into the week for neighbors near and far. The Fun Fair was a great time, and God's love was shared everywhere.
Share Your VBS Photos!

Summertime means Vacation Bible School (VBS) time for many congregations!  We would like to hear what congregations around our Southeastern Synod are doing for VBS.  Send us photos along with a brief description of your program.  What time of day did you have it?  Was it only for children or did you have an intergenerational VBS?  Did you try something new or different this year? If so, why, and how did it go?  Did you purchase a curriculum (if so, which one?) or did you write your own?  We'll share what we learn.
Funding Requests Now Being Accepted
Deadline: September 30

The Southeastern Synod's Budget and Finance Committee is now accepting proposals for funding in the 2015-16 Ministry Funding Plan. Agencies, institutions, and other groups who wish to request synodical funding are invited to submit their requests online using the following link: 2015-16 Funding Request.

Funding for committees and task forces is approved on a different cycle and requires a different form. The most recent Synod Assembly approved lump sum funding for committees and task forces during the 2014-15 fiscal year. The Synod Council will allocate the approved total among the different groups, based on recommendations from the Budget and Finance Committee. Committee and Task Force chairpersons should submit their funding request from the 2014-15 fiscal year, using the online form located at: Committee/TF Funding for 2014-15.

The deadline for submission of funding requests is Monday, September 30, 2013. Anyone unable to submit a funding request electronically may obtain a paper copy of the necessary forms by contacting the Synod Office (404-589-1977).

Stewardship Resources

Stewardship Idea #3 - Plan Your Annual Response Program: Many congregations hold their annual stewardship response program in the fall. If you do, you may have already started planning for that program. If you haven't started planning yet, today would be a good time to get started.

Some congregations create their own program each year. Most congregations use a program that someone else has created. Click here and select "6/18/2013 - Plan Your Annual Response Program" from the drop-down menu to discover three simple, straightforward, and effective stewardship response programs for use in your congregation.

Chick Lane, Director of the Center for Stewardship at Luther Seminary, recently conducted two stewardship workshops. He presented seven ideas for stewardship. For seven weeks, Chick Lane will share these ideas with subscribers to the Stewardship for the 21st Century Newsletter. Visit the archives to see ideas 1 through 3 or subscribe and receive stewardship ideas in your inbox. You can also find the Center for Stewardship Leaders on our resource links page

Ecumenical Stewardship Center: The Ecumenical Stewardship Center connects, inspires, and equips Christian steward leaders to transform church communities through a vital relationship with a generous God and in fellowship with today's church - gathered, outreaching, and scattered. Resources include materials, forums, and events for stewardship engagement. Click here to learn more about ESC or sign up for email updates about new initiatives, resources, and events.

Cycling in Savannah

Zin Ko, a recently arrived Burmese refugee in Savannah, had been walking to his ESL classes because he did not have any other means of transportation. If he used public transportation from his apartment to his class, he would have to travel on several buses, since no bus would take him directly there. This trip would take him more than two hours to complete. He preferred to walk, which took him about an hour and a half. Although the walk was shorter than the ride, it cost him in other ways: the sun burned his skin, and he was tired by the time he got to class. He did not know what to do about this problem.

On a recent morning in May, Zin Ko arrived at LSG's office in Savannah for employment training as usual. However, Deidre Harrison, Program Manager for Refugee Services in Savannah, had a surprise for him that day. She told him to go out to the parking lot and look at her car. Resting against the side of her vehicle was a bicycle, donated to LSG by Virginia Huber, a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and sister of LSG's Linda Larson.

When Zin Ko saw the bike, he was ecstatic. He knew that his commute to class would be only 30 minutes now. In addition, he could explore the city with the other recently arrived Burmese family who already had bikes. LSG thanks Virginia for helping Zin Ko get to work faster and know the city better!

One of the biggest issues in the current political landscape is immigration reform. In Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service's weekly The Update, panelists offer an insider's view on what's happening right now on Capitol Hill related to immigration reform. This week, Mary Giovagnoli reflects on the value that immigrants bring to the United States. Bishop Julian Gordy awaits next week's final vote in the Senate on comprehensive immigration reform. Lisa Sharon Harper offers her prayer that members of the Senate ignore extremists and come up with fair legislation that will help fix our broken immigration system. Britney Nystrom worries about potential border enforcement measures.
