Community Dinner at Cross of Grace,
Jonesborough, TN
Last Sunday, Cross of Grace Lutheran Church in Jonesborough, TN hosted a free dinner for the community. Ninety persons from all walks of life responded. Their primary goal was to provide food for those in need; many families fit into that category, including many seniors. The other goal was to provide community. There were people from several local congregations, from our fellow Lutheran congregation in Johnson City, and from other places. They distributed 2,500 fliers to three elementary schools, the Senior Center, senior housing, public housing, and the food bank. Fifty posters were also distributed, along with some yard signs. In addition to the pictures below, there is a brief video here.

Hunger Ministry Highlight: Summer Sack Lunch Program
One way that congregations throughout the Southeastern Synod engage in mission is through hunger ministries. Jesus calls us to feed the hungry in our communities and around the world. This week's blog features the Summer Sack Lunch Program, a ministry of Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Peachtree City, GA. As Christ Our Shepherd reaches out to hungry people in Fayette County, the gospel ("good news") is made tangible through each sack lunch distributed with love. What is your congregation doing to feed the hungry where you are located? How are you doing God's work with your hands? We invite you to share stories from your own hunger and other ministries with the rest of the synod by commenting on our blog or emailing mangalet@elca-ses.org.
Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Peachtree City, GA (Fayette County) has been part of the Summer Sack Lunch Program for seven years. Working with the Department of Family and Children's Services of Fayette County and eight other Fayette County churches, nutritious lunches are assembled, packed and delivered to hungry children every day of the work week. World Refugee Day - June 20
|
|
Each year on June 20th, organizations and communities around the world celebrate World Refugee Day. World Refugee Day was established by the United Nations to honor the courage, strength, and determination of women, men, and children who are forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution, conflict, and violence. Throughout the month of May and into June, the Southeastern Synod E-News Weekly will feature resources and opportunities for you and your congregation to support refugees in your communities.
WE RECOGNIZE YOUR WALK: Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service's 2013 World Refugee Campaign Theme is WE RECOGNIZE YOUR WALK. This theme recognizes the walk of hardship refugees experience in their long journey to new homes and lives. LIRS offers opportunities for individuals and congregations to walk alongside refugees and live out Jesus' words: "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me" (Matthew 25:40 NIV). To more fully experience WRD on June 20, request your free WRD Kit. Kits include a Getting Started Guide, a ministry leader guide, refugee testimonials, Scripture reading/litany, and bulletin inserts. Click here to start walking.
Who is a Refugee?: The 1951 Refugee Convention establishing the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees spells out that a refugee is someone who "owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to, or owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country." UNHCR works to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Click here for resources, publications, maps, and stories about refugees around the world.

It's a Breeze - Refugees Learn to Navigate Atlanta's Public Transit System: In the fellowship hall of the Clarkston International Bible Church, 12 men and women gathered together, speaking different languages from around the world. Although they did not share a language, they did
all have one thing in common: each was holding a MARTA Breeze card. With this card in hand, they marched out of the hallway, moving toward the bus stop nearby.
On Thursday, Lutheran Services of Georgia's (LSG) Refugee Services hosted one of its Extended Cultural Orientation (ECO) classes. During this session, newly arrived refugees from Burma, Somalia, Iran, Iraq, Bhutan, and the Congo learned how to take the train from Clarkston to LSG's office downtown. Because these men and women will take trains and buses to find jobs, attend English classes, and visit new friends, they were learning an important skill. Along the way, there were a few surprises for the many individuals who had never used public transportation to travel around a city: during a brief talk on pedestrian safety, some were astounded to learn that crossing the street without a signal might earn them a ticket! After having a snack and participating in a quick debrief at LSG's office, they were on their way back to Clarkston, practicing the skills they learned in identifying East, West, North, and South signs at the station.
The ECO program comprises nine classes, each one imparting new skills and facts about life in the United
States to refugee clients. Other sessions include lessons on healthcare in the U.S., home management, personal safety, and U.S. laws and expectations. By the end of the program, the newly arrived refugee men and women will be on their way to gaining the self-sufficiency and cultural competency that they need to thrive in their communities.
