THE GREAT BRANDON AUCTION
SINCE 1989

One of Brandon's liveliest annual events will take place on Tuesday, July 23 in Central Park. The 25th Annual Great Brandon Auction has been raising funds for development projects in the Town of Brandon since 1989. Warren Kimble first pitched the idea to the Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce in 1989 and it has grown into a popular summer event.

At first it was Auctioneers Tom Whittaker and Barb Watters and in later years just Barb.
Over the 25 years, the Chamber has turned over more than $160,000 into many town projects. Barb does an amazing job of enticing bids, keeping up the pace, and entertaining the crowd all at the same time. She's auctioned off a Steinway and a urinal, fire hydrants, and Kimble originals. We've dealt with rain, winds, lightening, and even a power failure. Nothing has stopped us.

Below, you will find a short list of some of the items that will be up for grabs this year. We live in a very generous community and Central Park will be overflowing with items large and small. It takes about 50 volunteers to turn the day into a success and they are on-board and ready to work.

We invite you to be a part of the 25th Auction. Come on downtown and bid and buy. The preview starts at 2 pm and Auctioneer Barb will hit the gavel precisely at 4 pm. If you can't stay, you may leave a bid with a Chamber staff person. BLSG Insect Control District staff will be spraying the night before so we will stay comfortable all evening. Brandon Lions will be grilling dinner and providing cold drinks and snacks so you can support two area non-profits without even leaving the Park!

Bring a chair, a friend and cash or a good check. Combined purchases over $500 can charge with a credit card. We do charge Vermont state sales tax of 6% on all purchases except gift certificates and clothes so if you are a re-seller, bring your tax number.

Auctioneer Barb Watters has presided over every auction! Bart Lund (left) is a dedicated volunteer who still helps.

Tom Whittaker was used to auctioning off cows when in 1989, he became Auctioneer at the Great Brandon Auction. He and Barb shared the podium every year and Tom continued into his 90s. He passed away in 2004.

We've sold a lot of chairs over the years! The Chamber's first Executive Director, Jim Jasmin, seated front row center.

AN AUCTION TREASURE

This original quilt, designed and made by former Brandon resident Patty Wood, will be auctioned on July 23. It is called THE SHIRT OFF HIS BACK QUILT. Patty scoped out businesses all over town and literally, took the shirt off many a person's back! She then made the quilt with all the T-shirts.

If you have a shirt from an existing or old Brandon business, team, organization or whatever, and you would like to have it included in another quilt Patty will be making, please drop it off at Carr's Florist.

Photos show some of the quilt square detail!

ORIGINAL ART

Brandon is fortunate to have such talented and generous artists living here. Both Warren Kimble and Judith Reilly have been generous donors over the years. Here are photos of the original works being auctioned on Tuesday.

Matt (l) and Joel contemplate an unusual donation.

Brandon's youth have been a bit part of the Auction over the years. From left, Ariel, Kalle, and Matt have all helped out for many many years. They grow up, they move out, and when they can, they come back to help. All three will be helping this year!

Long-time Auction Managers: Bernie (l) and Joel with Bennie

The following year, Ben became an Auction Donor with this original art. Entitled "The Auction", the artwork is auctioned annually -- high bidder wins the rights to keep the drawing for a year.
