New Illinois Laws in 2014
More than 200 new laws went into effect in Illinois on Jan. 1. Everything from an increase in the speed limit on tollways and interstate highways --up from 65 mph to 70 mph--to an increase in the fine for being a litter bug. Check out more on new laws.

County Board Discusses Rules Related to Medical Cannabis Zoning
This week, a Lake County board committee recommended scheduling a public hearing to get input into rules for the siting and operation of medical cannabis cultivation centers and dispensaries, which are now allowed under Illinois law as of Jan. 1. The full county board is expected to support moving forward with the public hearing, and we will provide information in this newsletter about the meeting once it is scheduled. Whereas the state law allows 60 dispensaries statewide, a number of which could be located in the Lake County area, the state law limits one cultivation center per multi-county state police district, which means Lake County would only be eligible for one at most. Lake County and over three dozen municipalities worked together to develop model zoning regulations that focus on location, operation, parking, marijuana-related signage, and security.
