Severe Weather Alert!

Lake County is under a severe weather threat and Flash Flood Watch due to the intense rain that is expected. The forecast calls for strong winds with gusts, large hail, frequent lightning, and heavy rain.

The first round of storms is expected to move east of the Lake County area by mid-day with potentially more significant severe weather later Wednesday afternoon and evening. There is also a small risk of tornadoes with discrete storms that form Wednesday afternoon.
Please monitor the evolving weather situation and follow Alert Lake County on Twitter.

Motorists who encounter a flooded roadway should remember "turn around, don't drown," because fast-moving water can undermine road surfaces and sweep vehicles off the roadway.

County Board Asks Governor for Amendatory Veto of Special Legislation Creating Election Commission

The County Board approved a resolution at its meeting this week officially opposing legislation that mandates the creation of an election commission in Lake County. The board is asking for the governor to veto the language, which was included in a much larger piece of election related legislation. If signed by the governor, it would transfer election authority from the county clerk, and result in approximately $700,000 in additional annual expense to Lake County. The measure singles out Lake County and treats voters differently by eliminating a referendum option.

New Floodplain Mapping

The Lake County Stormwater Management Commission (SMC) will be amending the Watershed Development Ordinance to include the new floodplain maps.  The Lake County Planning, Building & Development Department and other municipalities throughout Lake County will adopt the new floodplain maps to continue eligibility in the National Flood Insurance Program.

Property owners should be aware of these changes and the flood hazards in their area, as it can impact their insurance rates. The new maps will become effective on September 18, 2013.

Additional information and resources are available on the Lake County website.
