Illinois Tollway Awards $4 million Contract to Plan for the Extension of IL Rte. 53/120 in Lake County

The Illinois Tollway Board of Directors approved a $4 million contract with Schaumburg-based TranSystems Corp. that will continue to plan for the proposed extension of Illinois Route 53/120 in Lake County. TranSystems will develop a detailed engineering concept, evaluate cost estimates, refine traffic and revenue analyses and survey customers' willingness to pay tolls on the proposed extension. The contract also includes services to study the environmental and economic impacts of the project.

The Tollway's Finance Administration Operations and Strategic Planning Committees recommended the contract to the Tollway Board after reviewing the Illinois Route 53/120 Blue Ribbon Advisory Council's report. A key recommendation from the Council was development of a coordinated, corridorwide land use plan. This will be led by Lake County and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning and will actively engage each municipality along the corridor to develop an integrated plan for land use, transportation, economic development and open space. The Council recommended that the completed plan be adopted by Lake County and each municipality. The corridor plan process is expected to be underway by mid-2013.

The Illinois Route 53/120 Extension is expected to cost between $2.3 and $2.7 billion. Cost estimates developed as part of the detailed engineering concept will inform future discussions on how to finance the project and potential sources of revenue. This could include local and other sources, as recommended by the Council.

Rising Gas Prices Make Taking Transit a Bargain

The American Public Transportation Association recently analyzed the costs of commuting by car. The price of regular unleaded gas in the Chicago area is up 50¢ from a month ago to $4.08 in the city to $3.93 across the metro area. Transit options such as Pace, Metra, and CTA save commuters money and provide a relaxed and reliable way to commute. They found that those who use transit in the Chicago area saved an average of $942 monthly with an annual savings of $11,298. Chicago offers the fourth-highest average savings for transit users.
This information was compiled by the TMA of Lake-Cook, a business association whose mission is to improve employees' commute and work for a better quality of life in Lake and Cook County in northeastern Illinois.

In recent years, Lake County has seen an increase in chloride levels in streams, lakes, and ponds due to road salt run-off.  Salt isn't biodegradable so it stays in our environment and can be toxic to aquatic life.
