Health Department Offers Annual Flu Vaccine
The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center is offering flu and pneumonia vaccinations to the general public. The vaccine is available by appointment only at the Health Department's Immunizations Annex at 2303 Dodge Avenue in Waukegan.
The most important step in protecting against the flu is getting an annual flu vaccine. Take everyday preventive steps, such as staying away from sick people and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading influenza to others.
For more information, visit the Lake County Health Department website or call 847.377.8470.

Remembering September 11
On September 11th, our minds inevitably return to that terrible day 11 years ago when our country was attacked and we lost loved ones, friends and heroes. After the grief and shock of that day, our country has a renewed sense of the importance of our families, our communities and our way of life. We must not forget the events of September 11, 2001.

Health Department Keeps an Eye on West Nile Risk

Every year, the Lake County Health Department conducts West Nile virus surveillance throughout the county. This includes testing dead birds for the disease, running approximately 28 mosquito traps, and inspections of stagnant water areas.
To date, three birds and 81 mosquito batches have tested positive for West Nile Virus, and Lake County has had five confirmed human cases.
When areas of high West Nile Virus activity are found, the Health Department works with the municipality, township or Lake County Forest Preserve District to determine if additional larvicide or adulticide treatments are needed.
The number of positive WNV mosquito batches has dropped during the last couple of weeks due to cooler nights, however, monitoring will continue through the end of September.
You can best protect yourself and your family against West Nile virus by following the three R's - reduce your exposure to mosquitoes, repel them by wearing insect repellent, and report areas where mosquitoes typically breed.

Green Living: Help Conserve Our Groundwater
Did you know it can take centuries for rain to replenish a groundwater aquifer? In the past, we've offered tips from the Northwest Water Planning Alliance on saving water by fixing household leaks and irrigating your lawn responsibly. You also can help conserve our groundwater supply by using bathroom fixtures, including shower heads and toilets, with a WaterSense label. For more information, visit the EPA's WaterSense website.
Groundwater is not an endless supply. Help use our resource efficiently. View the NWPA flyer.
For more information about organizations working toward a sustainable water supply for this area that is both economically and environmentally sound, visit the website of the NWPA, of which Lake County is a member, or the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.
