Earthquake in Northern Illinois

On January 31, 2012, people in Lake and McHenry Counties felt shaking caused by a small earthquake centered near the county line. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is the national agency that monitors earthquakes. Information about this minor earthquake can be found HERE.

Earthquakes are not that common in northern Illinois, but shaking caused by earthquakes in the central U.S. may be felt farther distances from the center because the earth's crust is more rigid here than in California, where stronger earthquakes are more common. Even though northern Illinois earthquakes are not that common, any earthquake is capable of knocking things off shelves and causing minor damage to buildings.

In general, if there were to be an earthquake, there wouldn't be ANY advance warning, as there is no formal warning (siren, EAS alert, text message, etc) indicating that there is an earthquake.  The single most important thing to know about being in a moderate to severe earthquake is "Drop, Cover, and Hold On!". Check www.AlertLakeCounty.com for more preparedness information.

Earthquake Preparedness Event

Lake County Emergency Management personnel will be participating in a multi-state earthquake preparedness event next week. The Great Central U.S. Shake Out is scheduled for Tuesday, February 7, 2012. Residents can participate in a "shakeout" event at any time either at home, school or work. More information.
