Dear Parents and the Community

The Board of Education and I are saddened to share the news that retired superintendent and Westlake's founding principal, John Whearty, passed away May 12.

Mr. Whearty, a Mount Pleasant resident, retired in 1996 after 34 years of service to the school district. He remained committed to public education throughout his life, was an active member of the school community and, as a member of the Mount Pleasant Rotary, cherished honoring Westlake and neighboring Valhalla students each month for their service to others.

An avid supporter of the arts and athletics in our schools, Mr. Whearty continued to be a visible supporter of the school district, serving on many committees and attending school functions as a loving grandparent to WHS alums Nichole and Justin Thomas.

Reposing at Hawthorne Funeral Home on Friday, May 13 from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Valhalla United Methodist Church, Saturday at 11 a.m.

The district wishes to extend its sincere condolences to his wife, Joan, and the Whearty and Thomas families at this sad time.

Regards,

Sue
