Dear Parents and the Community,

As you know, the oversight of our Special Education department is undergoing a structural change with impacts that will improve its overall operation and stability.

In a December newsLINK, I outlined that change, which included an internal review of the position of special education director in our district. From that review, it was determined that supports to the structural framework of the department were necessary to successfully address the supervisory needs of the department and the administrative needs of the district.

As such, in the 2016-17 school year, we have transitioned the position of Director of Special Education to the position of Director of Pupil Personnel and Student Services. This overarching position will have oversight and a supervisory role in the following areas:
  • Special education (including supervisors, programs, services, CPSE/CSE, staff, data reporting)
  • Building principals and district wide student services (including guidance, attendance, nurses, psychologists, social worker)
  • Pupil personnel budget (including grants and annual budget for in-district and out-of-district students and transportation requests) and compliance with all federal and state regulations regarding individuals with disabilities
Additionally, the current K-12 supervisor of special education position will become the secondary supervisor of special education and the district will create a corresponding elementary supervisor of special education to oversee grades K-5. Supervisors will oversee special education at their designated levels including the supervision of our special education teachers, case managers and their professional development, as well management of IEPs and chairing CSE meetings.

With this new structure we are confident that increased time, support and communication with staff and parents will impact students and importantly, student learning in a positive manner.

The district is advertising for the two positions, Director of Pupil Personnel and the Supervisor of Elementary Special Education and will begin the candidate review process over the next few weeks. It is the district's intention to identify viable candidates who have the appropriate credentials and meet the district's needs by the conclusion of March 2016.

Opportunities for parent voice and a description of the process will be described in further detail under separate cover; however, if you wish to indicate your desire to participate in this process, you can send an email to
PPS@mtplcsd.org. Please include your name, contact information, grade(s) that your child(ren) are in our schools, and why/how you can contribute to the process. With many parents willing to serve and a very limited number of seats available, we want to be as open and provide as many opportunities as possible.

As always, I will keep you informed of the progress and outcome of the searches.

Stay warm during this cold and snowy week!

Best,

Sue
