Dear Parents,

Since the middle of September, the district has been engaged in a search for a new director of special education. This process included several parent meetings, a special education "coffee and questions," a survey to parents and the staff, and last week's first round of interviews with candidates.

The posting for the position yielded 19 applicants of whom five were contacted for an interview. The individuals who were contacted were credentialed, experienced in the area of special education and brought strengths to the interview table. The initial interview committee co-chaired by Mary Ellis, director of curriculum, and Dr. Adam Bronstein, middle school principal, included parent representatives from the district PTAs, teachers, administrators, and high school students. This initial committee supported advancing two candidates forward in the process.

This past Saturday, I met with both finalists and last evening, the finalists met with stakeholder groups including teachers, staff, administrators, and parents. Everyone who RSVP'd to participate was included in the conversation. The candidates also will meet with school board members who will have an opportunity to ask questions. Finally, I will make a recommendation to the Board, and if all goes well, a candidate will be presented for Board consideration at this Wednesday's BOE meeting.

This process has been inclusive and supported by the many voices of our school community. As appropriate, both candidates through this confidential process have been open and responsive to the district's questions, reference requests, and have notified their current school district of their finalist status. Each is excited with the potential of joining the Mount Pleasant school community.

I look forward to sending you news of the search results later this week.

As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Regards,

Sue
