Dear Parents,

I am writing to update you on the status of the hiring of a new director of special education.

We are following a three-step hiring process that is similar to that of previous administrator hirings where identified candidates meet with an interview committee, stakeholder groups and finally the superintendent before being recommended to the Board of Education.

Currently an interview committee comprised of administrators, teachers, special education staff, parents, and students is being formed to meet with qualified applicants. After interviewing these candidates, the committee will recommend those they feel best fit the district's needs and vision to go on to interviews with a stakeholders group. The stakeholders group will be made up of parents, staff, and administrators who, after meeting with the candidates, will make a recommendation of one or more candidates to meet with me as the final step in the process. I will then make a recommendation to the Board of Education for its approval.

If you are interested in serving on the second stakeholder group as a parent representative, please respond to this newsLINK with your interest. The group will meet on Thursday, November 12 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Participants must be able to commit to the entire three hour block of time and RSVP to participate. We are looking for approximately 10 parents.

This two-committee vetting system increases the number of voices in the process and gives more interested parties the opportunity to participate. In addition, opportunities for input have been available through daytime and evening meetings and a survey, which was conducted last month for parents and staff regarding what is desired in a new director of special education. Responses from the survey and comments from the parent meetings will be used throughout the interview and hiring process to ensure all concerns are represented.  It is our hope that by the end of November we will have a new director of special education on board.

In an effort to ensure the new director will have a successful tenure with the district, we will provide strong mentoring to support the transition and will look at the administrative structure of special education to better support our goals.

If you have any questions regarding the process, please feel free to call my office or email me.

Thank you for your continued support.

Regards,

Sue
