Dear Parents and Guardians,

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to our interim director of special education, Sue Lockhart, who started in our district on Sept. 16. Ms. Lockhart has assumed administrative duties in the office of special education as the district seeks a new director.

The search process for a new director has begun and is being conducted in a manner similar to the middle school principal search that was done last spring. The district currently is accepting resumes for the position and a search committee will be formed to help in securing a successor. In order to allow both parents and staff to contribute to the selection process, the district will send out a survey within the next week to gather information on what is important to both groups in the selection of an administrator in the area of special education. Considering information submitted through the surveys will be a component of the interview process.

Highly-qualified candidates from the candidate pool will meet with an initial committee made up of teachers, staff, administrators, parents, and high school students. The committee will make a recommendation to move select candidates to a second round of interviews. Candidates moving to the next phase of the process will meet with individual groups of parents, teachers, staff and administrators who will weigh in and serve in an advisory capacity to me. I also will meet with the final candidates prior to a recommendation to the Board and as always, the Board will meet with the finalist(s) prior to appointment. In the event that a suitable candidate is not found, the district will renew the search process.

Please know that the process is a transparent one, one built on trust, and designed to ensure confidence as the district moves forward in this area. Over the past few weeks, and in speaking with staff and parents, we heard concerns regarding how programs and services are delivered to students. We also heard a need for more information about special education, specifically about roles, responsibilities and how communication can be more effective within this area. To address these questions, I will hold a coffee hour in October with Sue Lockhart to start the conversation about roles and responsibilities in special education in Mount Pleasant. A newsLINK with more details and the date will be announced shortly.

Again, thank you for your support during this process. Your voice is welcome and essential as we build the future of our district for all students in our schools.

Regards,

Sue
