Good afternoon,

Thank you to the parents who attended this morning's special education meeting at Hawthorne Elementary School. As a gentle reminder, another session will be held this evening at 6 p.m. in the Westlake library. At parents' request, a third session will be held next Wednesday, September 16, at 7 p.m. also in the Westlake library.

As an outcome of this morning's discussion, a parent survey will be sent in the upcoming weeks to provide an opportunity for all parents in our district to have input in the selection process of the new special education director. Also, the selection process will resemble the process followed for other administrative positions in the district where a parents in an advisory role, have the opportunity to meet the candidate and provide input.

Another suggestion that was raised this morning, was to create a forum or an advisory council for parents in the area of special education. This can serve as an opportunity to increase and improve communications among our schools, the office of special education, parents and students. Topics of discussion can include special education programs and services, transitions, roles and responsibilities, and special education practices.

I look forward to continuing our ongoing discussion this evening and next week. Thank you again for your support.

Sincerely,
Sue
