Dear Parents and Guardians,

After a forty-five-year career in education, the last four at Westlake Middle School, Dr. Robert Hendrickson has announced his intention to retire effective July 1, 2015.

Though a relative newcomer to the Westlake family, Dr. Hendrickson brought a well-grounded academic perspective, a keen sense of humor and sense of caring and compassion to the middle school. As middle school principal, his dedication to student growth, both academically and emotionally, helped bring about more opportunities for his students through additional math and ELA instruction, world languages in grade 6, advanced courses for all eighth graders in the sciences, and next year, the option for all eighth-grade students to participate in Algebra.

Through Dr. Hendrickson's efforts and support, the middle school continues its work toward excellence with learner-centered classrooms, advisory periods for social and emotional growth, the Olweus anti-bullying program and groundbreaking work in preparation for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program.

Admired by his colleagues, Dr. Hendrickson will be missed by our administrative team, the middle school teachers, staff and especially the students, who appreciated both Dr. Hendrickson's wit and his understanding of middle school life.

Over the next few weeks, the district will post for the position of Westlake Middle School principal and a search committee will be formed to help in securing a successor. Additional information will be forthcoming as the process develops.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Hendrickson on his retirement and extending our best wishes to him and his family in this next chapter of his life.

Regards,
Sue
