Dear Parents and Community,

Today, Tuesday, May 20 is the School Budget Vote and Board of Education elections. Laurie Donato, Edward Barnes and Eric Schulze are running for two seats on the school board. Voting for both the budget and school board seats will take place from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Westlake High School gym.

With careful fiscal and pedagogical planning, the 2014-15 district budget remains within the the property tax cap, supports programs and services to meet the district's strategic goals, and is eligible for the Governor's tax relief benefit. As you may be aware and according to the tax relief benefit, homeowners whose income is $500,000 or less in school districts that stay within the property tax cap will receive a rebate check in the fall of 2014 for the full amount of their tax increase.

The 2014-15 budget maintains class sizes, transportation, increases support to the area of special education, the arts, and athletics, proposes updates to technology, supports professional development for staff to meet the requirements of state standards in math and ELA and supports the state mandates including the implementation of the Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) for teacher evaluation. Capital expenditures to upgrade classroom security district-wide as well as to bring a gas line to Columbus Elementary School to increase efficiency in heating the school building are planned.

If you have not had the chance to read the district's budget newsletter, or familiarize yourself with the school board candidates, you can find the information on the district website (mtplcsd.org) or by clicking here.

Thank you for your ongoing support and for all that you do for the students in Mount Pleasant.

Sincerely,

Sue
