GLOBAL MESSENGERS | |
Athletes Spreading the Message
The role of the Global Messenger is to help promote the good news of Special Olympics. Global Messengers are expected to go out in the community to speak about the joy of participating in Special Olympics. We are very fortunate, and most proud to have two Global Messengers for Seminole County: Chris Friedman and Richard Mendola. We encourage the community to "listen to our athletes". If you are interested in having Chris or Richard speak to your company or organization, please contact: Kevin Lajeunesse, 407-257-7730/ [email protected] |
ATHLETES OF THE MONTH | |
CHASE ANTHONY
Chase is very excited to be the Ahlete of the Month. He has been actively involved in Special Olympics for years. He started bowling in Pennsylvania, which he excelled at, and ended up winning many trophies which he proudly displays in his room for all to see. Chase recently moved to Florida and was very happy to see that there were Special Olympics programs available here as well. He immediately joined the bowling program. He has also competed in swimming and is currently in the basketball program. He looks forward to seeing all of the friends he has made every week, and continues learning new skills that he can use and be proud of. He is sure to be part of the Special Olympics for years to come.
Bowling and Basketball
AND
JUSTIN KING
Bowling and Basketball
Justin loves everything about Special Olympics. He participated in Special Olympics as a young child at Stenstrom Elementary, and then not again until he was 22! When he was about eight, he participated in Track and Field in the walking competition. He was so excited that he ran the whole way.
As a young man, his first sport was bowling. Then he participated in swimming, and now he is in basketball. He has participated in all of these sports this year, so it has been a busy and engaging time for us. He especially enjoys the camaraderie to be found by making friends and getting to know the other athletes and the coaches.
This has been especially good for Justin, as people with autism sometimes struggle to make social connections. On Saturdays, Justin pops right up, eager to get going. He has Challenger baseball first thing, followed by Special Olympics basketball, and then ends the day with Special Olympics bowling. Justin is healthy and vibrant and loves to make other people laugh; he is truly a blessing to me and to others.
I am proud of him for being selected as Athlete of the Month as he works very hard at improving his skills, and we look forward to participating in other sports as well. Special Olympics has a special place in our hearts as they form the framework around which our lives revolve, and neither Justin nor I can imagine life without this special organization.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH | |
Bryan Bradburn
It was definitely an experience that I won't forget! While at Boardwalk Bowl I heard that a bowler from the Miami area was extremely nervous. It just so happened that he was bowling on the same lanes that our bowler (Onyx) was on. I approached the bowler and attempted to calm him down as much as I could. I even coached him during the event.
Afterwards, his coach approached me and thanked me for my help. When the awards were issued I was very happy that he had come in second place. I immediately congratulated him and then returned back to the group I was with. Shortly afterwards I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was the bowler from Miami. He wanted to thank me and asked if I would mind having my picture taken with him. It was one of those unexpected moments in life that just about brought me to tears. I wasn't expecting anything because I was doing something that I enjoy and was happy that I could help. In fact, even his coach asked for a picture and thanked me for helping his athlete. Most coaches would tell you to stay away from their athletes but this coach realized that I was genuinely concerned and wanted to help even if his athlete was bowling against mine. As it turns out Onyx took the gold for his division which also was a bonus for me and SOSC.
I can't wait for the next event (even if it's not bowling) and I look forward to working with SOSC in the future. I also want to thank everyone else that worked so hard and selfishly sacrificed their time in order to make this Fall Classic a success.

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS | |
Special Olympics Seminole County relies greatly on assistance from Sponsors. Sponsor and donor support is always needed, not only to provide financial help, but to offer safe and productive training facilities to our athletes. Without the generous donations of many individuals and organizations, our athletes would not have the facilities, equipment, volunteers or funds to train and compete on a year-round basis for FREE. We all appreciate everyone's support!

Any contribution or assistance you can provide to help SOSC meet these financial goals is greatly appreciated! If you would like to make a donation by mail, please send your contribution to the following address:
