September 2016

Welcome to the newest edition of the Cornerstones enewsletter. The BACnet International community benefits from information and education shared through Cornerstones, the organization's monthly electronic publication. This publication is disseminated to members of the BACnet community, connecting corporate, integrator, site, student and individual end users.

Cornerstones is a unique publication because it speaks not only to the engineer and contractor communities, but also to facility professionals, building managers and owners, and other personnel.

This is where you come in. We need you to connect! If there is a best practice, company news, product news or BACnet Success Stories you want to share, please send them to us. And don't leave out the photos!

All submissions should be sent to Natalie Nardone, BACnet International's Association Manager.

Success Story

Moorhead Public Schools, District 152

Moorhead Public Schools

Moorhead, MN

The Moorhead Public Schools project was a retrofit of four elementary school buildings in the district, ranging from 70,000 sq ft to 104,000 sq ft, with up to two levels each.

The District required universal and remote control over all of their locations, for monitoring and efficiency purposes.

Distech Controls EC-NetAX Web-based building management platform was used to achieve multi-site integration and for the ability to integrate with existing control and terminal equipment, helping the District to respect their retrofit budgets.

BACnet ECB Series controllers and Allure EC-Smart-Vue communicating sensors, delivering increased comfort control and energy efficiency.

The District now has a majority of its schools networked together via EC-NetAX, a single, unified interface and system, for efficiency in operations and monitoring, and additional operational cost savings.

More European-based Options for BACnet Product Testing

The iHomeLab of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Lucerne, Switzerland, and DIAL's DAkkS accredited testing center in Lüdenscheid, Germany, have recently achieved formal recognition as BACnet test organizations.

iHomeLab and DIAL join two existing test organizations in providing BACnet conformance testing in accordance with the relevant test policies and requirements.

All tests at these four labs are performed in accordance with the ISO 16484-6 test standard or ANSI/ASHRAE 135.1 and BTL test plans. Products are required tosuccessfully pass the rigorous testing process at one of these organizations in order to display the BTL Mark.

BTL testing can help suppliers find issues that could create interoperability problems in the field. The early identification of conformance issues through testing benefits manufacturers through lower life-cycle costs and increased customer satisfaction.

S4 Open: BACnet-N2 Router 1.30 Maintenance Release 1

Major Release 1.30 of the BACnet-N2 Router has been in the field for several months now and is showing good results.  During S4's Q/A test process they try to emulate a real world technical environment and the ways that their integrator partners will use their products, but, there is no proving ground or test bed quite like the real world.

S4 issues Maintenance Releases in-between major releases to continuously improve products with urgently needed fixes or enhancements. Maintenance Release 1 primarily addresses issues encountered by early adopters of release 1.30.

Schneider Electric Announces Dual Communication Protocol for PowerLogic PM5500 Series Meter

Schneider Electric

Schneider Electric today announced BACnet IP protocol as an additional, standard feature for PowerLogic PM5500 power meters. These meters can now simultaneously communicate with building management and energy management systems using both BACnet and Modbus protocols.

PM5500 meters are BTL tested to ensure seamless interoperability between products from any manufacturer, adherence to new building specifications and reduced risk of integration errors and associated costs in the field. The PM5500 meters are the first in the market to combine dual communications protocols and BTL certification.
