Connect with Success
Bank of the West
Fargo, ND, USA

The project was a retrofit of an office tower occupied by Bank of the West, a financial services company.

Built in 1973, the building features a glass facade, and is 10 stories above ground.

Bank of the West was looking to achieve control over their system from one location and to be able to view a graphics display of all of their equipment in operation. They also wanted trending and alarming reports. The EC-NetAX web-based building management platform was used to achieve multi-site integration and for the ability to integrate with existing control and terminal equipment. ECB BACnet Series controllers were used for HVAC control.

SUCCESS: China's BACnet Golden Week

BACnet Golden Week was held successfully Nov. 16-20 in Shenzhen, China. It was hosted by the National Technical Committee 426 on Digital Technique of Intelligent Building and Residence Community of Standardization Administration of China (SAC/TC426); supported by BACnet International, BACnet Interest Group Europe (BIG-EU), BACnet Interest Group China and Asia (BIG-CA), ASHRAE Hong Kong Chapter and ASHRAE Region XIII; and organized by the Instrumentation Technology and Economy Institute (ITEI). The event included a BACnet Forum, BACnet training and BACnet Plug Fest.

The first event, the BACnet Forum, was held on Nov.16. The keynote speakers were: BACnet International President Andy McMillian; Chairman of ASHRAE SSPC 135 Bernhard Isler; BIG-CA Chairman Douglas Chan; Immediate Past Chairman of BACnet International Raymond Rae; ASHRAE Region XIII Chairman Edward Tsui; ASHRAE Hong Kong Chapter Chairman Dr. C S Wong; Shenzhen Intelligent City Research Association Chairman Li Lin; and ITEI Vice Chief Engineer Li Yumin. These individuals shared their experience on BACnet development in China and abroad, BACnet standard updates, the latest on BACnet application in the buildings, and BACnet testing and certification details.

The forum closed with an active Q&A session between keynote speakers and the participants. Many consider this the highlight of the event.

The second event, BACnet training, was held on Nov. 17. BACnet expert Zhou Hong was joined by Isler to instruct this event. Attendees for this training included 31 engineers from more than 10 companies related to BACnet products, as well as the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department of Hong Kong Government (EMSD-HK).

Finally, the BACnet PlugFest was held on Nov.18 and 19. Hong was consulting this event, and the five participating companies--Delta, HMS, PcVue, Shanghai Jingjie and Siemens--brought the full line of BACnet devices from B-AWS to B-SS for testing.

The unique offerings from this 3-in-1 event proved to be highly successful and well-received. Over 70 percent of the participants returned the forum evaluation forms, and all the trainees at the training event indicated interest for future training. Sixteen companies handed in the BIG-CA membership application for review and approval. These metrics prove that BACnet Golden Week will be something all industry professionals should have on their calendars year after year. Thank you to everyone who made this event an incredible success.

WattStopper's Lighting Controls Solution Wins 2015 Architectural Products Magazine Award

WattStopper, a leading manufacturer of energy efficient lighting controls for commercial and residential use, today announced that it received the 2015 Architectural Products magazine Product Innovation Award (PIA) in the Lighting/Electrical category. WattStopper was awarded this top accolade for the product design and functionality of its Wireless Exterior Lighting Controls solution.

This is the second PIA award WattStopper has received from the publication. The first award was given in 2012 for its Digital Lighting Management solution, named best lighting control system in the Lighting/Electrical category.
Architectural Products magazine is the U.S. national trade publication for architects, specifiers, designers and building owners/operators in commercial, light commercial and institutional markets.

The publication's awards program, now in its fifth year, recognizes a wide variety of innovative buildings-related products. Winners were judged by a group of 32 independent industry professionals.

WattStopper Exterior Lighting Controls allow facility managers to schedule and remotely manage outdoor lighting, as well as take action if faults occur based on real-time energy reporting. The solution is ideal for a wide range of commercial site, parking, pathway and roadway lighting. It delivers substantial energy and cost savings by up to 39 percent via automation and remote management of lighting. Built on open standards, including 6LoWPAN and BACnet, it ensures maximum flexibility for outdoor lighting control and integration with existing systems. Per a judge's comment, "If we can't have universal controls, then having a control system like this that can control many manufacturers' lighting products is next best."

AHR Preview: Sierra Monitor Corporation

Ken Sinclair from AutomatedBuildings.com talks to Varun Nagaraj, President and CEO of Sierra Monitor Corporation, about the company's offering at the 2016 AHR Expo, Booth #1159.

Sinclair:  Can you remind me what Sierra Monitor (SMC) exhibited at last year's AHR Expo?

Nagaraj: Last year, we focused on highlighting our FieldServer protocol gateway solutions as the Swiss Army knife for system integrators. We also debuted our BTL Certified BACnet Router at the time and highlighted its ease-of-use features, such as DeviceFind™ and its 2 RS-485 ports.

Sinclair:  From the last interview about half a year ago, you talked about Sierra Monitor being involved with the IIoT and cloud solutions through the FieldServer product line. Does this hold true today?

Nagaraj: Yes, as you know, we've always been a strong player in the building automation space with FieldServer gateways and routers that can translate more than 140 protocol languages. With over 200,000 FieldServers installed in commercial and industrial facilities worldwide, we have realized that is a very good and strategic vantage point for us. FieldServer is the perfect on-ramp to the IIoT and cloud.

Sinclair:  Is this what you will be exhibiting at the 2016 AHR Expo?

Nagaraj: Along with exhibiting our FieldServer gateways and routers, we will also be introducing something we call the "SMC Device Cloud." The SMC Device Cloud is a "point-of-presence," or "PoP." If you remember back in the internet service provider days, there was the concept of the PoP, where a PoP is a place where things in the field got together. Relating back to our FieldServer line, what we're talking about now is our gateways and routers that are scattered across the planet all essentially speaking back to a central cloud authority - registering themselves, sharing information back and forth, and getting the latest firmware upgrades. This SMC Device Cloud is what we're bringing to market as our cloud solution, and we will be exhibiting this at the Expo.

Sinclair: Will the SMC Device Cloud compete with other clouds, such as Salesforce, Microsoft Azure, Google, Oracle, and so on?
