Connect in Cornerstones
The BACnet International community benefits from Cornerstones, the organization's electronic month publication. This publication is disseminated to members of the BACnet community, connecting corporate, integrator, site, student and individual end users.

Cornerstones is a unique publication because it speaks not only to the engineer and contractor communities, but also to facility professionals, building managers and owners, and other personnel.

This is where you come in. We need you to connect! If there is a best practice, company news, product news or BACnet Success Stories you want to share, please send them to us. And don't leave out the photos!

All submissions should be sent to Erin Hall, BACnet International's communications and community manager.

The Ohio State University
Columbus, OH, United States

Nearly 15 years ago, the first BACnet project was installed at The Ohio State University by Building Control Integrators (BCI). The project, known as Evans Laboratory, was "live" to the world via BACnet/IP in early September of 2000. Since then, BACnet has become the adopted control's standard for the university. The original project included three main BACnet panels, manufactured by Delta Controls, with only 128 total inputs and outputs. Today, there are approximately 150,000 physical points throughout 65 facilities. It sounds simple enough, but this is not a "conventional" collection of I/O. The OSU BACnet network is currently comprised of 19 different vendors with connectivity to multiple system types.

For OSU, BACnet has become the catalyst for advancing controls beyond the traditional front. For instance, the university currently uses BACnet to monitor and/or control non HVAC/Lighting systems such as generator banks, laboratory rooms, critical patient rooms, fire alarms, air quality, power consumption, clock systems and so forth.

The Global Roadshow's Opening Event in Seattle Offered Insightful Presentations

BACnet is more than ever the global lead to reliable investments in building automation. With a yearly growth of 20 percent over the last five years the number of registered BACnet vendors exceeded the 800 mark. That was made evident at the opening event of the BACnet Global Roadshow on April 21 in Seattle. The next stops are taking place in Abu Dhabi (June 2), Warsaw (June 9) and Berlin (June 16). The last stretch will be in India, China, Singapore and Japan in the fall.

Lyle Bicknell, planner of the city of Seattle, and John Ringness from the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) presented the requirements of smart and efficient buildings.  Steve Bushby, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) highlighted the role of BACnet for the governments' energy concepts. Future directions were reported by the chairman of the BACnet Standardizing Committee (ASHRAE-SSPC 135), Carl Neilson.

Advancing Building Automation Systems Through Integrated Data Communications

Energy efficiency blossoms when building control systems adopt the same user interface.

In Part 1 of a continuing series, author Ed Ritchie discusses BACnet's data communications protocol and network solutions toward the integration of building automation systems. Our author explores business energy advantages in improved energy efficiency with a higher return on investment when facility managers adopt this widely-recognized standard among communication protocols. Follow Ritchie's in-depth series as he explores many advantages of BACnet and technology solutions for building automation and control systems.

A New Era of Energy Efficiency (Part 1)
By Ed Ritchie

BACnet protocol allows HVAC control, lighting control, access control, fire detection systems, and other associated equipment to all speak the same language.

Products and services for building automation systems that save energy are entering a new era as the technology evolves in performance and sophistication. But with so many offerings, the age-old problem of compatibility and integration can short circuit savings and efficiency gains. Yet, there is a solution that all building and facility managers should be aware of. It's called BACnet, a data communication protocol for building automation and control networks. Essentially, we're talking about software code, so what does that mean to the choice and use of building automation systems and related products?

Well, about 75 words on BACnet's history should lay the groundwork, and then we'll talk to some industry experts to see how you can benefit from this standard and why it's so important to maximizing energy savings and efficiency.
