Glens Falls HospitalGlens Falls, New York
The Challenge- Upgrade, simplify and establish internal control over building automation
- Reduce energy consumption and costs; improve physical plant's efficiency with a single platform for mechanical systems
- Improve patient comfort
- Complete control retrofit and mechanical upgrades with no disruption to hospital operations or level of patient care
The Players Founded in 1897, Glens Falls Hospital is a 410-bed acute care facility serving a six-county region in upstate New York. The 1 million sq. ft. complex includes a six-floor (plus basement) patient tower, completed in 2006, and a five-floor medical arts building with cancer treatment and outpatient surgical centers. Over the past two decades, Glens Falls Hospital's building automation had grown into a tangle of three distinct control systems which were poorly integrated and documented. The new patient tower had not been properly commissioned; hospital staff had received little to no training; and with the vendor maintaining proprietary control, "Maintenance was incredibly frustrated with the operating system," noted Jeremy McDonald, P.E., principal at Guth DeConzo Consulting Engineers. ------------------------------- Contemporary Controls Celebrates 40 Years of Business by Offering Free Technical Book
2015 marks Contemporary Controls' 40th year of designing and manufacturing network automation products. This is a true American success story considering that Contemporary Controls, an international company, began in the basement of the Founder and President of the Company, George Thomas. To help celebrate the 40th Anniversary, Contemporary Controls has published Network Communications for Buildings from a collection of articles from their Extension and Essentials technical newsletters.
All articles are updated and relevant with the latest information on network technology, applications and theory of network communications. Visit www.ccontrols.com/ncb to download your FREE copy.
"I have always had a strong interest to help educate the industry. As we reflect on 40 years, we cannot help but admire the technological changes that have influenced both the automation systems we produce as well as how companies are now doing business. We have witnessed the migration from standalone controllers to fieldbus-networked controllers to IP-based network controllers. The open-systems ovement has helped companies participate in markets once dominated by larger companies with their proprietary systems. The building automation market is a great example with technologies such as BACnet, Modbus and Ethernet for all to use," states George Thomas.

Carlo Gavazzi's SB2WEB24 is a configurable BACnet gateway which converts smart Dupline Modules, smart Dupline Signals and Energy Meter data points to BACnet objects. The Carlo Gavazzi Dupline smart building system 2 wire-bus provides many advantages in building automation installations. Unlike RS485 based solutions, Dupline can be wired using free topology for the cable including ring, star etc., the cable does not need to be screened or twisted and it can be run next to power cables without fear or interference. Many of the field devices are powered by the bus itself, which simplifies the installation removing the need for additional power supplies. Click here to read the entire release.
