We would like to invite you to take part in our Global Roadshow. It will span 2014 and 2015 and celebrates the 10th DIN EN ISO anniversary and the 20th ANSI anniversary of the BACnet standard. The Roadshow focusses on the benefits of BACnet for sustainable buildings in terms of construction, retrofitting and the integration in smart grids. It includes a state-of-the-art exhibition and provides the latest information about:
  • Open communication in building automation,
  • Development of standardization,
  • Interoperability of BACnet devices,
  • BTL Listing and European Certification,
  • BACnet vendors and suppliers.

Therefore the roadshow will be a decisive meeting point for BACnet users in the Americas, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific - and a fantastic networking platform for planners, integrators, specifiers, facility managers, owners, investors and manufacturers of building automation devices and systems.

Our goal is to increase the global awareness for BACnet. We will introduce the newest capabilities of building management systems and demonstrate the benefits of BACnet applications. We will give an update on the standard and develop new fruitful partnerships with planners, specifiers, operators and investors in industry, services and public administration. And we will encourage the establishment and nurturing of local interest groups of users, developers, providers of smart grids and IT infrastructure and local distributors.

Seize the day and confirm your participation in the international market. The global roadshow is the first worldwide event which is commonly hosted by BACnet International and the BACnet Interest Group Europe.

We are looking forward to meet you in one of the roadshow locations. Please click here for more information about the BACnet Global Roadshow.

October 28-30, 2014 | Charleston, S.C.
The BACnet International BACnet Testing Laboratories Working Group invites manufacturers of BACnet products to attend the 2014 Interoperability Workshop at the Charleston Marriott in Charleston, South Carolina. This is the 15th annual BACnet Interoperability Workshop and is hosted by BACnet International. This event permits vendors to test their BACnet products in a neutral and friendly environment with BACnet devices from other vendors. Last year nearly 90 BACnet engineers representing 39 companies attended the workshop and improved their BACnet implementations and testing methods.

The event will begin on Tuesday afternoon to allow for arrival on Monday and setup Tuesday morning. The testing starts at 12:30 pm and continues through Thursday afternoon.

ABB Manufacturing Facility

New Berlin, WI, United States

The 147,000 square-foot ABB manufacturing facility in New Berlin, WI, underwent a major renovation and expansion in the spring of 2014. The continued growth in variable frequency drive (VFD) sales, along with the addition of new products - medium voltage drives, electric vehicle charging stations, power electronics, and controls products - rendered the existing building too small. The task was to develop a building that not only met today's needs, but also one that would be compatible with future requirements. Words such as "green," "LEED Silver," and "sustainable" were not simply buzzwords, but were instead used as a roadmap on this project. The following success story will focus primarily on the building's HVAC system.

The existing design of the HVAC system dated back over 30 years. There was no central plant or building automation system (BAS) and most control was independent. Monitoring, maintenance, and troubleshooting were all done the old fashioned way. Unfortunately, walking around with a pen and paper results in a more reactive than proactive approach. Costs associated with the mechanical equipment continued to increase due to the age, down-time, and inefficiency of the equipment. While an HVAC system in a manufacturing facility is important for comfort, it is also critical for manufacturing and reliability. Imagine the humidification system going down in the middle of a Wisconsin winter. Low humidity increases the possibility for electrostatic discharges causing damage to electronic components. While many think of data centers and hospitals as being critical facilities, those who are responsible for maintaining an electronic manufacturing facility may ask that you do not forget about them.

Reducing Fume Hood Energy Consumption

Facility mangers all over the world constantly walk the fine line between providing a comfortable environment for building occupants and maintaining an efficient building; reducing energy costs wherever possible. When it comes to laboratories, whether it be those installed in a scientific research facility or a college, one common item in these labs are often a headache for those who are looking to reduce their energy costs AND provide a safe working environment for scientists, technicians, and students.

It's widely known that these laboratories, and specifically fume hoods, are significant consumers of energy in these locations.  For the most part, this is a necessary evil to guarantee the safety of the users, but that doesn't mean that there isn't room for improvement.  Like most applications in our industry, the key lies in intelligent control.

Will Kay, Director of Manufacturing at American Auto-Matrix, recently wrote an article discussing these issues and various methods that can be implemented, including occupancy control, hood lighting, and sash position monitoring, to help reduce the costs associated with these laboratories and their fume hoods. Distech Controls Launches Two New Apps
Distech Controls, an innovation leader in energy management solutions, today announced the launch of two new mobile apps: myDC Control and Smart-Sense Room Control.

Internationally recognized for their Innovative Solutions for Greener Buildings™, Distech Controls delivers unique productivity enhancing tools and intuitive, engaging interfaces. Now, combined with the mobile connectivity and familiar interface of an app, these offerings increase productivity for system integrators and control technicians, provide value for building managers, and ensure personalized comfort for occupants.

The myDC Control app
myDC Control is an invaluable tool for increased commissioning efficiency, reducing both associated time and costs. With this app, one can test and commission HVAC systems single-handedly. For example, a system integrator or control technician can walk over to the equipment being commissioned, and test its operation firsthand, while using the app to view, set and override related input and output values. In the same way, this individual can also test connected sensors and actuators.

In addition, for system integrators and building managers alike, the myDC Control app also allows for remote servicing and maintenance, and improved response time to service calls.  From wherever their work takes them, building managers can view alarms, perform diagnostics and take corrective actions such as overriding conditions, or changing a setpoint.  This app therefore reduces the need for onsite visits and associated time and travel costs.

Client response thus far has been overwhelmingly positive. "Great job! Fantastic app! This is something that we out in the field have needed for a while," reads one review. "Works great! Awesome app to have! Especially for the service tech or startup guy. Much easier than bringing out the laptop for a simple check," reads another. Reliable Controls Releases 902 MHz Versions
of SSE & SSEA Wireless Products

Reliable Controls is pleased to announce the release of 902 MHz versions of the SPACE-Sensor™ EnOcean (SSE) and SMART-Sensor™ EnOcean Accesspoint (SSEA) products. This frequency communicates on the 902 MHz band for the North American market; the new versions of these products increase the effective radio frequency range and offer enhanced resistance to interference.

The SSE and SSEA wireless devices can facilitate wireless EnOcean communication into any existing Reliable Controls MACH-System™ without the requirement of software upgrades.

The SSE is a wireless and battery-less transmitter that resides in the occupant space, using a photovoltaic cell to convert solar energy into electrical energy that is stored in the device. A fully charged SSE will continue to function in complete darkness for up to 7 days. Transmission rates can be DIP switch selectable from every 10, 60, or 100 seconds. The new 902 MHz has superior radio range, signal strength, and propagation. Transmission distances can be from a maximum of 30 m (100 ft.) line of sight, or 10 m through five commercial drywall walls, 2 brick walls, or two aero concrete walls.

The SSEA is a transceiver that connects directly to any Reliable Controls SMART-Net network. The SSEA can be added to any existing SMART-Net network and there is no need to upgrade firmware or software. Each SSEA can learn up to 18 different wireless points. Depending on the type of MACH controller used, 2 to 8 SSEAs can reside on the controller's SMART-Net. Additionally, the SSEA can accept many third party EnOcean products, including wireless relays, occupancy sensors, wall switches, card readers, and many other peripherals.
