ImaginOn: The Joe & Joan Martin Center
Charlotte, North Carolina
The Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County (PLCMC) and Children's Theatre of Charlotte (CTC) each offered engaging and educational programs for young people, but both were running out of space. The executive directors for both organizations decided to create a combined solution into a single, new facility.
Aesthetics became a vital part of the mechanical system design as unsightly panels and conduit have no place in a building designed to delight the eye as much as the mind. One of the biggest challenges was concealing as much equipment as possible.
An Alerton BACnet-based energy management system (EMS) provides energy efficient operation, including occupancy-based HVAC control, CO2 demand ventilation and more. Alerton's Envision for BACtalk front-end software manages all the functions and seamlessly integrates third-party devices and systems such as lighting control and fire/life safety.
Sophisticated control strategies--including supply air reset control, static pressure reset control, and fan speed modulation based on airflow measuring--effectively manage the vastly different heating and cooling needs of the library and the theater. In addition to motion-based space sensors, ImaginOn uses precision controls to reduce its energy use and increase savings by ensuring no space is over- or under-ventilated.

BACnet and the High Performance Building
Reach 73,000 Commercial and Institutional Building Owners and Facility Executives! July Special Report Sneak Peek
A high performance building is one that delivers top levels of energy efficiency and occupant comfort while the building is in operation, not just in design. A BACnet-based control system that pulls in multiple systems across the building offers powerful tools for achieving that goal. A key set of tools is analytics - software that uses powerful algorithms to analyze massive amounts of data to find operational problems. Analytics can take advantage of BACnet data to show facility executives how their buildings are operating from day to day. This article examines the ways that facility executives can use analytics and other measures to help ensure that high-performance design translates into high performance operation. Topics include:
- BACnet's contribution to achieving a high performance building
- How BACnet-based analytics can help ensure high levels of ongoing performance
- Role of the facility executive

Please click here for more information about Azbil Corporation. Azbil Corporation to Start Remote Maintenance Service for Overseas FacilitiesAzbil Corporation has started maintenance service by remote monitoring for overseas facilities from April 2014 as part of its global business development initiative.
Azbil provides service and maintenance as well as renewal proposals for building management systems (BMSs) installed at customers' sites in Japan. Through these services, the company delivers added value, such as enhancement of indoor environments, improvement of energy saving performance, and upgrades/renewal of equipment and facilities, to customers, thus earning high levels of trust from them. As an increasing number of customers are installing our BMSs in their overseas facilities, we realize the growing need to offer various diagnostic services, including maintenance and energy saving solutions, and also improved maintenance and building management efficiency. In view of this, Azbil has expanded its domestic service infrastructure and constructed a new network infrastructure that connects to overseas facilities.
Using this new infrastructure, our engineers in Japan who are equipped with advanced diagnostic skills provide support, such as technical assistance and data analysis, and also cooperate with local staff of overseas subsidiaries to offer overseas customers the same high-quality services and solutions provided in Japan. Azbil conducts remotely from Japan fault diagnosis, equipment control diagnosis, and energy saving diagnosis for azbil BMSs installed in overseas facilities, and dispatches local staff to respond to customers' requests for inspection, equipment restoration, and consultation.
Azbil Corporation's remote maintenance service network is connected to 1,800 buildings in Japan. At this launch of the remote maintenance service for overseas facilities, we decided to begin this service in Thailand first, and will expand it to Vietnam and Singapore in the near future. Our Building Automation business sector achieved 600 million yen in overseas service-related sales in fiscal 2012. We plan to expand those sales to about 1,500 million yen in fiscal 2016. Please click here for more information about Distech Controls.
Distech Controls New Headquarters Recognized for Excellence in DesignDistech Controls, an innovation leader in energy management solutions, today announced that its new headquarters has been selected by Environmental Design + Construction (EDC) Magazine as second runner up for the Excellence in Design (EID) Award, commercial category. This annual competition highlights projects that clearly demonstrate a commitment to green building and sustainable design.
This most recent accolade confirms that Distech Controls' global headquarters, located in Brossard Quebec, is more than just a building; it is a major accomplishment in the company's history. This investment is a realization of Distech Controls' values, based on innovation, passion, perseverance and sustainability. The new headquarters reinforces Distech Controls' roots in Canada and consolidates their presence in North America, while providing the means necessary to support the organization's continuous growth.
Winners of the EID Award were selected based on a number of criteria, ranging from innovative interior and exterior green design, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, water conservation, sustainable or recycled materials and resources, site selection and other green design factors, such as budget, company mission, certifications or design intent.
In designing the new Distech Controls headquarters, and in knowing that the company was doubling in space with the new building, it was particularly important to minimize its impact. The services of a local contractor, architectural firm, and interior designer were therefore called upon to design a building that could truly be a green champion in the community. In addition to Distech Controls' own building management system, building materials with low or no VOCs were selected, as was a white roof, low-e windows, and environmentally friendly finishing and furnishings. For more information about DENT Instruments, please click here. DENT Instruments Launches Ethernet on the PowerScout 24 Power MeterDENT Instruments, a global leader in the design and manufacture of power and energy measurement instruments, announced that the PowerScout 24 meter is now available as an Ethernet device. The PowerScout 24 Ethernet communicates using Modbus TCP or BACnet IP over Ethernet instead of an RS-485 connection. Ethernet networks have several advantages over RS-485 networks including faster meter response times, improved remote access, and the ability to support more PowerScout devices on a single network. Additionally, the ability to use existing Ethernet infrastructure means there is no need to install a separate network.
Christopher Dent, President of DENT Instruments said, "We are very excited about the addition of Ethernet capability to the multi-channel PowerScout 24. This optional feature enhances the capabilities of the PowerScout 24 and we are certain that clients will find the Ethernet communications helpful when adding the meter to their existing network."
The PowerScout 24 offers the lowest-cost per meter point versus comparable industrial multi-channel power meters. The modular design of the PowerScout 24 allows it to be configured for monitoring multiple electrical circuits or for current-only monitoring of branch circuits. There are virtually no restrictions in "mixing & matching" current transformers on the PowerScout 24 and any combination of CTs can be used.
DENT Instruments is a leading supplier of an array of precision measurement instrumentation and analytical software in the field of energy management. To see more product information, please click here.
