Headway Technologies
Milpitas, CA, United States

Continuous Improvement. When there's a great deal of low-hanging fruit to gather, it's an easy concept to embrace. But what happens when all the easy stuff is done and expectations for continuous improvement still exist? Such has been the challenge for Senior Facility Manager, Dan Burris, and his team at the Silicon Valley headquarters of Headway Technologies, a TDK subsidiary.

Headway manufacturers, in clean room fashion, aluminum titanium carbide wafers consisting of thousands of read/write heads used in computer hard drives. TDK sales of such devices account for about 1/3 of all such sales worldwide. The exacting standards for such fabrication necessitates that Class 100 clean rooms dominate the 115,000 sq. ft. Headway facility.

Their ISO-14001 registered quality system instills an inherent amount of interest in continuous improvement. Accordingly, each year Headway and TDK management determine high level goals and more specific objectives, including those related to energy-use reduction. Such goals are always based on the fabrication capacity requirements.

Wunderlich-Malec Pharmaceuticals Integration

This project was unique because of both its size and complexity.  Wunderlich-Malec needed to demonstrate expertise in process control, building automation, the pharmaceutical industry processes and procedures, and FDA regulations- in addition to the technical expertise necessary to meet the customer's functional and operational requirements. Wunderlich-Malec had a long term relationship with the customer and previously provided general automation support and system integration for GMP systems for this facility. The bulk of their previous work was related to industrial controls (PLC, SCADA, and HMI), as well as commissioning and qualification support.

They also had to demonstrate the ability to implement their proposed solution with minimal interruption to product manufacturing and with no risk to product yields or quality. Meeting these goals meant using technology from multiple vertical markets and integrating them into one cohesive solution. For entire story, please click here.

Alerton's new Ascent Building Management System is First to Combine BACtalk and Tridium's Niagara Framework® in a Single Controller

To help building owners better monitor and manage their heating and cooling related energy use, Alerton is rolling out its new Alerton® Ascent Building Management System, the first to combine in a single controller the industry standard BACnet protocol and Tridium's Niagara Framework® for more effective integration of multiple building systems.

Ascent is comprised of three products designed from the ground-up for ease of use and consistency across control systems: Ascent Microset 4 wall sensor; Ascent Control Module global controller; and Ascent Compass® software. The product suite is designed to simplify monitoring and control of HVAC systems, and will offer an open protocol for integration with other building systems, including lighting; security/access control; fire and life safety; elevators and escalators; irrigation; and specialized needs such as emergency and critical systems monitoring in hospitals, and tenant billing for leased spaces in office buildings. New Product Preview for Continental Control Systems
Products to be presented at NFMT Baltimore

New CTRC Rogowski Coil Current Transformer
At NFMT 2014, Continental Control Systems will demonstrate its new CTRC Rogowski coil current transformer. The device greatly simplifies installations to meet the increasing demand for accurate current measurement on conductors where traditional split-core and solid-core CTs are difficult to use. With its flexible design, the CTRC is perfect for large bus bars and irregular-shaped conductor bundles. The new coil offers a small, flexible profile, enabling it to be used on conductors in tight spaces where rigid CTs won't fit.

WattNode® Electric Power Meters - Now Offering ANSI C12.1 Accuracy, Accepted for Listing by BTL
Continental Control Systems will also showcase its entire line of WattNode® electric power meters, including the revenue-grade WattNode Revenue line. The WattNode Revenue meters meet the accuracy requirements of ANSI C12.1, and support Modbus®, BACnet®, or LonTalk® communications protocols or pulse output.
