3D LASER SCANNING AT MANDALAY MONASTERY
During the last week of April, a team from the University of Florida Historic Preservation Program was commissioned by World Monuments Fund to use 3D laser scanning to document Shwe-nandaw Kyaung in Mandalay, Myanmar. The only surviving structure of King Mindon's royal palace complex in Mandalay, the monastery boasts exceptional sculptural reliefs carved from teak. The 3D laser scanning technology was ideally suited for a rapid and extremely accurate recording of the wooden building and the existing conditions of its highly ornate façades and interiors.
It was the first time this technology has been employed to record Myanmar's heritage. The data will be utilized to create a set of detailed architectural drawings that will help inform the development of a conservation plan and subsequent restoration activities. It will also provide valuable archival records of the structure, an ideal tool for risk management in a country where numerous wooden structures have been destroyed by fire.
Facilitated by WMF, the University of Florida team demonstrated and shared knowledge of 3D laser scanning for heritage with the Department of Archaeology of Mandalay and the Mandalay Technological University. The project is funded in part through the large grants program from the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation as well as the U.S. embassy in Myanmar.
