TEMPLE OF PORTUNUS PROJECT WINS PRIZE

On October 4, the scientific and technical jury of the Italian Heritage Award assigned the Premio per il Restauro Archeologico ("Prize for Archaeological Conservation") to WMF's project at the Temple of Portunus in Rome's Forum Boarium for the conservation of the temple and its eighth-century paintings, and for structural interventions for anti-seismic improvement. The jury noted the excellent results achieved given the complexity of the project. WMF has been involved with the conservation of this Republican-era temple since 2006.

STUDENTS COMPLETE HERITAGE MANAGEMENT COURSE IN ERBIL

In early November, students from WMF's heritage management program in Iraq's Kurdistan region presented their final projects, completing the 11-week course. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, the program grew out of WMF's ongoing work at Babylon--four of the students are actively engaged professionals at the site--and as a means to increase capacity in the region. Coursework included classroom teaching, regional site visits, and practical exercises, and were led by U.S. faculty at the Iraqi Institute for the Conservation of Antiquities and Heritage in the city of Erbil. The course will take place again in 2014.

WORKSHOP ON ARCHITECTURAL SHELTERS FOR ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES HELD IN GUATEMALA

From October 25 to 31, WMF participated in the 3rd International Workshop on Architectural Covers in Archaeological Contexts in Guatemala City. The event follows on workshops held in Mexico in 2009 and Peru in 2011, where international field experts in archaeology, conservation, design, tourism, and site management gathered to discuss issues concerning the design and construction of protective shelters for archaeological sites around the world--a highly debated subject among experts. This year, four architects with experience in designing protective covers were invited to participate in the discussions and will generate proposals for four sites: Yaxchiln in Mexico, and Kaminaljuyu, Quirigua, and Yaxha in Guatemala, as part of a design charette.

The workshop was organized by World Monuments Fund, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Guatemala, the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala, Asociacin Tikal, and Fomento Cultural Banamex. The results of the workshop discussions and design proposals will be published in 2014.

SYMPOSIUM, EXHIBITION TO SUPPORT DISASTER RECOVERY

In early September, national and local officials gathered in Kesennuma, Japan--one of the sites most severely damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami of March 2011--to inaugurate a symposium and photo exhibition to raise awareness about the ongoing efforts to restore cultural heritage sites damaged in that catastrophe. During the event, a traditional tiger dance (tora-mai) was performed to highlight the intangible cultural heritage also at risk in the aftermath of the disaster. WMF currently supports the restoration of historic sites in Kesennuma and Sawara in partnership with local entities as part of their effort to help rebuild their communities.

GROUNDBREAKING AT NEW LG CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS

Despite a public outcry over LG Electronics USA's plan to build a new headquarters that would tower over the northern section of the Hudson River Palisades, work has continued. A groundbreaking ceremony held earlier this month was met with protesters who had marched over the George Washington Bridge. The building will alter the unspoilt view of the Palisades from northern Manhattan. Sign our petition to protect the Palisades
