Vivian Mann's Lecture on Jewish Islamic Art & Architecture
On Wednesday, November 28, WMF's friends and supporters were treated to a lecture by Dr. Vivian Mann titled Jewish Islamic Art & Architecture: Spain and North Africa. Dr. Mann's lecture illustrated the complex ethnic and religious history of the region and her remarks and images showed the tremendous impact these cultural influences had on art and architecture over the centuries. In the 1990s, WMF supported conservation efforts at the Ibn Danan Synagogue in Morocco, a notable example of the Jewish experience in North Africa. If you would like to enjoy Vivian Mann's lecture, it's available online.
Progress at Subotica Synagogue
This year, conservators in Serbia began working on the southwest façade of Subotica Synagogue, one of WMF's current Jewish heritage projects. WMF Field Projects Director Mark Weber visited the site in October 2012 and some of his progress photos are posted in our recent Subotica Synagogue slideshow. WMF is also excited to report that Subotica Synagogue is now a central feature of a new regional tourism initiative between Szeged, Hungary, and Subotica, Serbia. To address the larger influx of tourists to Subotica, a new organization has formed to manage visitor access.
Brener Synagogue Restored & Open to the Public
Brener Synagogue, included in the 2008 World Monuments Watch, was rededicated in September 2012 after two years of conservation work. Brener Synagogue is located in Santa Fe Moisés Ville, Argentina, and opened in 1909. Brener's listing on the Watch motivated the Province of Santa Fe to provide support and funds to restore the synagogue. The structure will continue to be used for religious services, and will also serve as an educational center to promote sustainable cultural tourism in the region. Learn more about Brener Synagogue on our website. New Brochure
