The US lacks a strong support system for the millions of people who are working while taking care of elderly parents, Liz O'Donnell writes. Elder-care responsibilities often fall to women, who may have to change jobs or take time away from work to manage the commitment. "The focus must not just be on the need for maternity leave or even parental leave, but family leave -- and other accommodations such as flex time, mentoring and reentry-assistance programs -- that will enable workers to care for their aging parents without their lives falling apart," O'Donnell writes. Millions of families in our aging nation face [a] delicate decision about when to use life-extending but potentially-grueling treatment on the elderly and sick - and the medical world is responding. This year for the first time, Medicare began reimbursing doctors for having end-of-life discussions as a separate, billable service. And health experts are increasingly examining the issue, with three recent end-of-life studies in the Journal of the American Medical Association among the growing body of research. (Ungar, 2/17)

To manage a small team, leaders need to work hard, fulfill commitments, and handle people and projects with kindness and understanding, writes Seth Godin. That means being willing to ask for help, to accept that outsiders can be valuable, and to communicate clearly and openly with everyone around you. "Talk to everyone as if they were your boss, your customer, the founder, your employee. It's all the same," Godin writes. Seth Godin's Blog (2/18)
