Differences in life expectancy by education and income are increasing. And while differential trends in smoking and other habits partly explain the lifespan gap, it's mostly a puzzle. I suspect that a major factor is stress -- that prolonged exposure to stress has risen more among families of moderate income than it has among those of high income, and that the stress is literally killing people. A new study raises doubts about this hypothesis. (Peter R. Orszag, 1/6)
Women on average earn less than men and pay more for products branded for women, but the problem isn't limited to consumers. Women business owners need to be vigilant to ensure they are not being charged more than their male counterparts for products and services. Analyzing spreadsheets, comparing data, knowing what services are actually worth and working with the right people are essential. NJBIZ (New Jersey) (1/4)

A growing number of primary care doctors, spurred by the federal health law and frustrations with insurance requirements, are bringing a service that generally has been considered "health care for billionaires" to middle-income, Medicaid and Medicare populations. It's called direct primary care, modeled after "concierge" practices that have gained prominence in the past two decades. (Luthra, 1/14)
A new book details how CEOs and wealthy people keep their inboxes under control, chiefly by setting aside blocks of time for processing e-mail and by being mindful about which messages they respond to or forward to others. "If you send less email, you'll also receive less email," Kevin Kruse writes. Forbes (10/17)
