ABC summer ball memo
"One of the beautiful things about baseball is that every once in a while you come into a situation where you want to, and where you have to, reach down and prove something" --NOLAN RYAN

ABC Nation

Good afternoon. What a blessing God has given us to have all this rain in the area! John Danks makes his 2013 debut tonight vs the Marlins. His journey from injury last season, to surgery, through rehab and now back to the mound in the majors has been tough, but he has persevered and I am proud of him. Say a special prayer for his start on the mound tonight. He squares off against the organization I played for (Marlins) who's current manager is a former teammate of mine, Mike Redmond. Tonight I am rooting for the White Sox!

I want to say a special thank you to all the families who were at the ABC summer ball meeting last Sunday. Having the opportunity to spend that time together as a "family" was invaluable. The indoor workouts have gotten off to a great start this week and we are looking forward to the opportunity to spend time together each week.

Below are a few data points I would like to bring to your attention:

  • No ABC baseball activities this weekend or Monday (Memorial Day)
Reminder that there are no ABC activities planned this weekend (Sat/Sun) or on Monday. The Memorial Day weekend has been a traditional "off weekend" for our organization. Our desire is that families enjoy a long weekend together away from baseball to recharge and prepare for the summer grind. I do, however, encourage you to play catch....every day. It is time for you to get your arm back in mid-season form and ready for the summer ball work load.
  • Summer ball paperwork

Friendly reminder that ball players must have the following two forms on file prior to beginning tournament play: Authorization for Medical Treatment & Release of Liability. You are welcome to mail to PO Box 40192 Austin or drop off at either indoor academy. Click here to print.

  • Pro-Style skills testing combine, Sunday, 6/2 - uniform pick up
The ABC pro-style skills testing combine is a highlight of the summer and a great way for us to kick off the summer season. Our desire is to help you better understand how to showcase your skills in this type of environment as well as help establish bench-marks for you to build on. The ABC staff uses information gathered during our skills testing combine to create reports on each player, identify deficiencies, and use when communicating with college coaches and pro scouts. The more comfortable and familiar you are in a skills testing environment, the more you will thrive when all eyes (and stop watches) are on you!
*this will be our primary day for uniform pick up
**there will also be a make up summer ball orientation meeting for families who were unable to attend the meeting hosted at FEFC last Sunday.
  • Tuesday field workouts
Each Tuesday this summer we are scheduled to be out on the ball field for instruction, reps, fungo and team fundamentals. The first Tuesday field workout is scheduled for 6/4 (a week from this Tuesday).
We are adopting a field-clinic format for the Tuesday field workouts. Ball players will be working in groups specific to their position (ex: catchers, outfielders, middle infielders, 1B, etc). This will afford the ABC coaching staff the opportunity to drill in and provide expert and unique instruction specific to each position on the field.

Start times are as follows:
6:00-7:00 catchers and outfielders
7:00-8:00 1B, 3B, middle infielders

Tuesday field clinics will be hosted on both sides of town. Ball players who attend weekly indoor workshops at the south academy will report to Preston Field (near Zilker Park, directions on your team page) and ball players who attend weekly indoor workshops at the north academy will report to Westwood HS.
*I will be posting info on the ABC website that shows a breakdown of which session (6:00 or 7:00) each ball player should plan to attend (based on your primary position). I will be sending out a memo with additional info.
