Healthy Behaviors Training Series Recaps:

September: Calories In/Calories Out

The United States Tennis Association and the Food Supplement and Nutrition Education Program- University of Maryland Extension joined together to help us kick off the first in our training series. Alicia Von Lossberg, a representative from the USTA, led a session demonstrating the adaptability of tennis and explaining how any program in any location can bring this much loved game to their kids. After a quick cool down, the workshop participants benefited from a dynamic lesson led by Lynn Rubin from FSNE on fun and interesting new ways to bring nutrition education and healthier food options into their programs.

October: The Power of Play with Playworks
This 3 hour workshop presented by Sean Keelan, an experienced trainer from Playworks, taught about how to create a fun, safe environment where kids are encouraged to play and learn while resolving conflicts quickly and peacefully.  Participants were able to get a hands-on look at how game like Shipwrecked and Olympic 4-Square, combined with constant encouragement and adult participation, can capture kids' attention and keep them focused on being active.

November: Youth Engaged in Health

To wrap up our three part series, SPARK and Community Bridges partnered with us to teach program providers about the importance of engaging youth.  Ellen Ormsby, a representative from SPARK started the morning with some exciting new games to keep kids moving and integrate education into activity.  Afterwards, Allison Jones and Sia Boima from Community Bridges led a discussion about their program and how it empowers young women to be leaders in their community.

If you would like to see all the pictures from all three of these training, be sure to visit our Flickr page.  Also, if you missed out on these workshops or are looking for more training opportunities, the Healthy Behaviors Day if our March Conference will offer similar hands-on workshops.  For more information, visit our Conference webpage HERE

Healthy tip of the day:

Worried about over eating at all your upcoming holiday parties? Try eating a light snack like a small salad or plate of veggies before leaving for the party.  The less hungry you are the less tempted you'll be to over indulge.
