#106: Welcome to WCS! Part 3
Terminology
Quote of the Week

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

-Martin Luther King

Leah Remini

Leah Remini Speaks Up
Today's quote comes straight from the beautiful Leah Remini (of Dancing with the Stars and King of Queens fame).

She posted the MLK quote on Twitter when she plugged HBO's Going Clear.

It came at the right time. As much as you love hearing from me, and wish I would write more, there is always an unseen cost when I do so.

If you watched Going Clear, then you gained access to some of the never-before-seen footage of what happens to people who leave Scientology and/or question it.

It's not much different in WCS.

It takes bravery to speak up. It takes courage. There are a lot of new faces - surprising faces! - speaking up in WCS lately.

We could make our own "Going Clear" documentary at this point, chock full of high up leadership names saying, "Yes, I did this. And I did that. I did it all. And I can't believe I did any of it. It's all true..."

One day...

We are all equal: those who have left, those who are speaking out, those who are asking questions and those who are trying to create reforms.

But most importantly: we are all ALIVE. Our lives have not ended. They are just beginning. Think of Leah and that amazing Contemporary routine she did.

Think of my Note last summer, when I mentioned all the wonderful changes that occurred when I finally took off.

Think of your friends who have left or who fight - think of how energized and full of freedom they truly are.

Lives on the courageous paths are always brimming with the promise of new life.

So for those staying silent - it is your choice - but consider your life: is this really the way you want it to end?

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." MLK would know. It's truly food for thought.

Here's to courage,
Katherine

Dear Reader,

Hit with a tremendous cold, I've been asleep for a week. I woke up just in time to see Going Clear on HBO Documentaries. I am still digesting it, but I already made some really amazing discoveries about WCS through its filter. I look forward to sharing those with you next week.

I promise, it will be well worth the wait!

xoxo, Katherine
PS - for those of you who don't have HBO, nor really want all their other offerings, there's good news! They are releasing their channels to an "online subscription" service format in April. That means you don't need cable to subscribe - just an internet connection. It's called HBO Now (not HBO Go). Look it up! You can subscribe for a month to watch the Going Clear documentary, and then unsubscribe if you'd like. I'll keep you posted!
Welcome to WCS! Part 3: Terminology
There is SO Much in
Part Three!!!

Unless you're a dance teacher with a lot of experience, you don't really realize just how much terminology there is when it comes to WCS - terminology that isn't used anywhere else in any other dance.

We are so used to the word "points" that we forget no one else uses them. Salsa dancers, ballroom dancers - even line dancers - they have no idea what we mean when we say the word "points."

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Newcomers have to learn a lot of things the hard way in WCS - and often waste a whole lot of money

in the process.

That's what Part 3 was designed to eliminate. It's so much easier to take a class, go to a convention for the first time or hang out with other WCS dancers, when you understand the words and concepts that everyone assumes they know.

I don't just cover dance terms, like rhythms (doubles vs triples, etc), but I cover political terms (like Points) as well. I talk about the council, I talk about the Rock Step, I talk about All Stars vs. Champions, charting music, etc, etc, etc.

It's excellent stuff - and remember - it's not just for beginners. Even teachers will learn a great deal. You don't want newcomers knowing more than you when you see them next, do you? Nothing feels worse than a question you don't know the answer to.

We used to be a very educated community - sharing knowledge in a million different ways - and these Audio Commentaries aim to help return us to those days. The more knowledge, the better the dancing. Aaaaah-men.
