December 2015

RSVP to Member Forum #2
In December, SRFC members are invited to join the Board of Directors and the General Manager for a member forum. By holding these "listening sessions" on two different nights, the board hopes to create a convenient venue for members to engage directly with the leadership team and provide input into our future plans.

The second and final member forum of 2015 is coming up on Tuesday, 12/8 at 7:00 pm. We hope you will join us! If you plan to attend, please RSVP
so that we can arrange a large enough space. We are planning to hold this session inside the store on Kensington Road.

Member Forum #2
Tuesday 12/8 * 7:00 pm
at Syracuse Real Food Co-op
Share input with the board and management
Discuss our co-op's Values, Vision, and Strategies for the future
The second forum will follow the same format as the first, which took place on Tuesday, 12/1. About 20 members came together to reflect on SRFC's core values, discuss visions for the future of our cooperative, and debate strategies for boosting our financial sustainability as well as building member equity. The strategy section included a presentation from General Manager Jeremy DeChario, who explained how SRFC's current member discount program impacts our financial position and our ability to issue patronage dividends; then, members were encouraged to ask questions and give feedback.

To read more about these forums, check out our 11/19 eNewsletter. We hope to see you on December 8!

Annual Board Election Results

During November 2015, 70 member-owners of the Syracuse Real Food Co-op cast ballots for the annual Board of Directors election. Thanks to each and every person who took the time and care to practice Co-op Principle number 2: democratic member control!

Election Report
A total of 70 ballots were submitted. One could not be validated. All 69 of the validated ballots were qualified.*

The 69 validated and qualified ballots contained the following candidate votes:
    Steve Morris - 66 votes
    Tom Taylor - 64 votes
    Briana Kohlbrenner - 62 votes
    Write Ins - 1 vote

*Ballots are invalid if they are not in sealed envelopes; if the seals do not bear member signatures; or if the member identification printed on the envelope does not match SRFC records. Validating ballots is an important step to prevent fraud. Ballots are disqualified if they contain more than the maximum number of votes (this year, members could vote for up to three candidates).

The board will confirm these election results through a motion at the next board meeting.

Congratulations!
Please join the Board in welcoming Tom and Briana as new directors, and thanking Steve for his continued service. Each will serve three-year terms (2016-2018), beginning January 2016.

Thanks to Outgoing Board Members
Julie Longmore and Thane Joyal have each decided to cycle off the board after several years of leadership. These two members invested countless hours and made invaluable contributions to our cooperative throughout their tenure. We hope the entire membership will join us in sending heartfelt gratitude and best wishes to Julie and Thane!

365 Days of Participation
The annual election isn't the only time members can engage with cooperative governance. Monthly board meetings are always open to the public; dates are included in the weekly e-newsletter. Membership meetings take place in the spring and fall each year. Any other time, members are encouraged to send feedback to the board at [email protected].
