THE NEWLAND CENTER APRIL 1% WEDNESDAY
"

Founded in 1990 as The Learning Place by Phyllis Newland
The New Newland Center is a non-profit, volunteer-based chartered corporation dedicated to providing free adult literacy services to the Syracuse inner-city neighborhoods. Their center is conveniently located on 1443 East Genesee Street with access from all neighborhoods of the city via bus lines.
For twenty-five years The Newland Center has been providing free adult literacy services. They offer ESL classes, GED (TASC ) prep, basic reading , writing and Math. They strive to enable adults and older youth to acquire the reading, writing, and math skills needed to function in daily life.

They do this primarily with volunteers who tutor one on one,
Linda Green, Executive Director of The Newland Center at work with kids
and in small group instruction to enrolled adult students. Students are assessed to evaluate their strengths and needs when they enroll. A full range of educational subjects are offered. They plan to use the donation from 1% Wednesday to support Internet service at the Center for one year.

On April 25th they are having a dinner fundraiser to celebrate their 25th Anniversary. Contact Linda Green at (315) 471-1446 if you are interested in attending. They are also funded by foundation grants, local organizations and individual contributions. Volunteers are always welcome as tutors, office staff and board committee members.
