ONONDAGA CASA - 1% WEDNESDAY
| " |
Onondaga CASA is a part of the Center for Community Alternatives, Inc. (CCA). The mission of Onondaga CASA is to advocate in court for the best interests of abused and neglected children. The Onondaga County CASA program recruits, trains and supervises volunteers from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds to assist the court in protecting the best interests of abused and neglected children. The program and its individual volunteers promote safe, permanent and nurturing homes for children.
Onondaga CASA started in 1996, following informal discussion and interest in the CASA model on the part of Family Court judges, law guardians and public and private agencies, a local CASA Steering Committee was formed to evaluate and develop a local CASA program. CCA stepped up to run a CASA program serving the children of Onondaga County. Through CCA's grant writing efforts, a National CASA Association start-up grant was awarded.
| CASA Induction April 2012 |
Since then the program has grown to be able to maintain 40 active volunteers and serve about 120 children annually.
At the present time the CASA program advocates for 30% of the children in placement in Onondaga County. It is their CASA program's goal to have a CASA volunteer for every abused and neglected child in Family Court. CCA sustains the CASA program with funding from the United Way of CNY, NY State Office of Court Administration and donations from their friends and supporters. Any increase in funding would assist in the provision of additional volunteer supervision, which would allow for an increase in the number of active CASAs, which in turn would provide services for more children. If you would like more information about Onondaga CASA, or would like to support or volunteer with Onondaga CASA please contact Katie Tastrom, Program Coordinator, at ktastrom@communityalternatives.org or (315) 422-5638 ext. 223.
