GLUTEN FREE BEER AT THE CO-OP IS HERE"
Jeremy DeChario, Brau Meister, Has Been Researching Gluten Free Beers & What's Out There For The Co-op Shoppers

At the coop we have lots of Gluten Free shoppers who we do our best to serve.  One area that has been especially difficult is with beer, because all beer contains barley (and sometimes wheat or rye).  With the rise of knowledge about gluten intolerance and celiac many alternatives have arisen.  Most gluten free beers are brewed using Sorghum and a blend of other grains including millet, buckwheat and rice.  Some companies, like Widmer Brothers (described below) are using a new technique to remove the gluten from beer brewed with barley.  Here are some of the Gluten Free options available at the co-op.

Steadfast Beer Company

We are excited to welcome a new brand of
Steadfast Sorghum Pale Ale
Gluten Free beers to the co-op, Albany-based
Steadfast Beer Co.
Specializing in sorghum based beers, we will stock the Belgian style Blonde, the American Pale Ale and, most exciting, the Pumpkin ale.  No longer will those who are gluten intolerant miss the seasonal treat that is pumpkin beer. Some tasting notes of the Pale:  Pours golden, with persistent white head with a citrusy aroma.  The beer tastes biscuity with a grapefruity hop bitterness and a clean finish.

Green's Brewing

Green's Quest
Green's beers have been brewed in Lochristi, Belgium at the highly-respected DeProef Brewery since 2004.
Green's beers are Belgian inspired and primarily use sorghum in their production. Quest, their Belgian Tripel, pours a straw-like amber color and smells vaguely malty with some tart apple.  It tastes almost cidery with some yeasty bitterness and a champagne carbonation.

Widmer Brothers Brewing

Widmer Brothers Brewing Portland, OR
Widmer Bros. have been brewing in the beer-centric city of Portland, Oregon since 1984.  They recently began brewing a line of Gluten Removed beers under the brand name Omission.  After brewing, the gluten is removed from the beer using a proprietary process, each batch of beer is then tested in an independent lab. The test is called ELISA, or, properly, the R-5 Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay, and the results are posted on the Omission website.  The Omission Pale pours a clear amber orange, with a dissipating white head.  Bready aroma with some citrusy hops, has some hop on the palate.  Overall this is the closest to traditional gluten laden beers.
