Medical professionals generally agree that children are more susceptible to foodborne illness for several reasons, including that their immune systems are not yet fully developed so their ability to fight infection is reduced.
 
In 2013 the Consumer Federation of America released a report  that found there is surprisingly little attention given to the issue of low-income children and foodborne illness. Most of the research that was identified by CFA focused on the barriers to assuring safe food for low-income consumers and less on children in particular.
