About International Women's Day

When:  Friday 8 March 2013

Where: Everywhere

What:   International Women's Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women's Day is a national holiday.

Why:   Suffragettes campaigned for women's right to vote. The word 'Suffragette' is derived from the word "suffrage" meaning the right to vote. International Women's Day honours the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women's success, and reminds of inequities still to be redressed.

 NWCAVE Committee Reports

Missing Persons' Division

Shelley Shaffer, Chair

NWCAVE Missing Person's Division has taken on two other cases this month, Raven Furlong a missing 17 yr old from Aurora, CO and Kayla Croft-Payne missing from Washington State. Both cases appear to be linked to another of our cases, Kara Nichols.  All three cases have a common denominator, all three girls had a profile on a modeling site - we launched a media campaign this week; the cases were covered by People Magazine (online), Huffington Post, Inside Edition (which aired this past Monday).  Links are posted on NWCAVE's Facebook and on our website.

Another case we took last month is Lisa Wallace, a missing mother with a brain tumor out of Alabama who has been missing since October. Her mother retained NWCAVE and one of our advisory members, private investigator Kathy Johnston. The media started locally with a two-page article about Lisa and NWCAVE.

Michelle, Kathy and I will be heading to Alabama at the end of the month to meet with the FBI and hold a balloon release and candlelight vigil for Lisa with Lisa's parents and friends.

If you have any information about these cases, please email me at Tips@nwcave.org.

Let's bring them home!

At a ceremony at the Interior Department, President Obama signs the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The Vice President, who was the author of the original bill while he was in the senate, also delivers remarks.

The Violence Against Women Act, originally passed in 1994, "strengthens the criminal justice system's response to crimes against women, including domestic violence, sexual assault and trafficking," according to the White House.
