Dear Nesbit Families,

As we prepare for this holiday season, we're reminded of all the things for which we are grateful: Family, friends,
health, and community.

Community...

As many of you may know, some Belmont-Redwood Shores families have been displaced this holiday as the recent storms flooded their homes. In the spirit of community, we ask that you consider helping these families during this rather difficult time. Please read the following and donate.
Thank You and Happy Holidays!
Belmont Families in Need of Our Help
(The following was taken from GoFundMe.com, the online source hosting this effort)

"11 families with children in Belmont-Redwood Shores School District schools (Nesbit, Cipriani and Ralston) suffered a devastating blow when last week's heavy rains flooded their mobile park homes.  Rain levels reached as high as 3 feet forcing families to be evacuated by the Red Cross to the gymnasium at College of San Mateo and nearby motels.  Fortunately, no one was injured in the flood.

These families with young children have struggled to make the best of a bleak situation -- property was damaged, food in refrigerators lost and clean-up efforts have been extensive.  If this is not enough to contend with, living in a gymnasium and sleeping with many other families is fraught with additional challenges.

Our hope is that Belmont-Redwood Shores School District  families will band together to show these families love and support through a donation to this fund.  We will raise money through Thursday, December 18, and then give the families monies raised on Friday, December 19th."

Thank You!

Dear Puma families,

With Winter Break and the end of the year around the corner,  I am reflecting on this year and all the good things that have happened, especially this month's Candy Cane Lane. A special Thank You to Shannon Estes, Linda Fonseca and the elves who helped make Candy Cane Lane another big success.

I am also looking forward to new and exciting things ahead. I am excited for the new Nesbit middle school to break ground in April and the growth our school will see. I am also excited about the upcoming School Force Read-A-Thon. In January, we will be kicking off this Read-A-Thon with a Scholastic Book Fair! Laura Lyle is chairing the Book Fair,  and she is looking for a co-chair and volunteers to help during the event. Please let me know if you are able to help (AShawMFT@gmail.com); I will pass your contact information on to her.

Finally, I want to thank everyone for donating to our Write-a- Check campaign and Puma Zoom. We came close to meeting our fundraising goals for both events. If you still have a check in your child's backpack or sitting on the counter, we can accept your donations throughout the year. If you have not joined PTA, please do so today. The $20 membership fee is good for up to 2 members and you can join throughout the school year!

Have a wonderful break with your families and friends. I hope many joyful memories are made through the end of the year.

Puma Pride,

Alanna Filippi

Library News

December was another busy month in the library. We had lots of holiday books out on display for the students to choose from.

Beginning in January we will be reading the 5 stories nominated for CALIFORNIA YOUNG READER AWARD. When we get through them, it will be time to vote. All students in California hear the same stories and voting needs to be completed by April 1st. It's a fun project we always enjoy participating in.

Please remember to return your library books and DO NOT take them on vacation with you.

Happy Holidays from the Nesbit Library!

Mrs. Branscum

Walk/Roll-To-School Day

A big high five goes to the 65 students who walked to school on the stormy Wednesday, December 4th!

And on that day, our 5th Graders came in first for having the most students participating, followed by the 3rd Graders!!

Thank You to Tracy Chen, Hayley Chen, Courtney Chen, Logan Chen, Derrick Chan, and Steven Maganaris for helping out that morning with setting up and passing out the charms.

Keep up the walking/rolling to school as much as you can.  If you need to drive, try parking outside of the school and walk in.  This will keep the traffic congestion to a minimum in our parking lot.

Our next Walk/Roll-To-School Day will be on the first Wednesday of January, 1/7.
Keep your key chain to add more trinkets!

Nesbit Peer Conflict Program

Peer Conflict Managers

are

Coming to Nesbit!

4th and 5th graders will be trained as conflict managers this week. They will be able to help students in grades 1 - 5 to solve conflicts on the playground.  The training will be conducted by Mindy Shelton, Health Educator /Wellness Coordinator with the Healthy Schools Initiative Grant.

We need parent volunteers to help with the training.  If you're available today, 12/18 from 1:30-2:30 and would like to help, please contact Mindy Shelton at mshelton@brssd.org or Shannon Estes at shanestes4@yahoo.com.

Thanks!

School Force Read-A-Thon

12th Annual READ-A-THON is HAPPENING!

Jan. 16 - Jan. 30 , 2015

The Reading Power Read-A-Thon is an annual School-Force Fundraising event, and at the same time, it encourages the love of reading. Money raised will help maintain a quality education in the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District. During these two weeks, students will collect donations for the time they spend reading. (Reading Power pledge packet will be sent home in January.) Last year, Belmont and Redwood Shores minutes read totaled a record 4.4 years, raising over $284,000 for vital programs funded through School-Force!

Please join our efforts by participating in this year's READ-A-THON.  Your contribution makes a big difference to our schools!

NOTE: If every student generates $150 in donations (that's only three $50 pledges), we will raise over $550,000 which will be used to help fund valuable programs in our schools.

We will need lots of volunteers for this event.  If you would like to help, please email Arlene Guerrero at aguerrero94010@yahoo.com.

Save the Date

Moonlight and Martinis

Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 14, 2015, from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Planning for the event is underway and we look forward to hosting you at this don't-miss event (did we mention it's a kid-free night out?!), while helping School-Force raise money for all our kids.

'Moonlight and Martinis' at the College of San Mateo will include a sit down dinner, a live band, a high end raffle (more details to come!), and plenty of fun.  This year, we will be auctioning all items online (family, business and school donations including parking spots and parties!) which will allow more of our community to bid and purchase auction items.  However, we will be saving some select items which will only be available to guests who attend 'Moonlight and Martinis' on March 14.

To learn more or to volunteer for the event, go to the School-Force Annual Fundraiser - Moonlight and Martinis webpage.
