2014 CTOTF Spring Turbine Forum: Issue #4

User/OEM collaboration on 7E/EA issues hot topic at upcoming CTOTF conference
If you don't make it a point to attend a user group meeting it's unlikely that you'll meet someone who can contribute in a meaningful way to O&M decision-making for your engines. The next CTOTF 7E/7EA Roundtable will be conducted at the user group's Fall 2014 Conference and Trade Show, September 7-11, at the Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego. It will feature user presentations on component repair/vendor selection/shop inspections and the findings, and experience gained, from a 7EA major outage. more

Attemperator issues continue to dog combined-cycle operators. . .

Presentations on attemperator (desuperheaters) issues have been made at many user-group meetings over the last 10 years or so. The problems identified generally can be traced to hardware and/or controls ill-suited for the service, poor steam piping design, poor installation, and/or operating procedures not consistent with long service life. more

How to get an additional 5%, or more, power from your 7FA at a lower heat rate

PSM's four-hour technical workshop on Day One of the 7F Users Group's 2014 Conference, conducted at the steering committee's request, featured seven presentations. This issue brings you up to date on the following topics:

  • "Performance Upgrades," Chris Johnston, Director of Airfoils Engineering R&D.
  • "Rotor Solutions," Chad Garner, Manager of R&D Machine Integration.
  • "Controls and Monitoring Capabilities," Jesse Sewell, Director of Service Engineering. more
Best practices for repair, replacement of cracked, corroded HRSG pressure parts

HRST's Product/Project Manager Rob Tretter discussed repair of tube leaks and of damage to nozzles and piping, as well as complete panel replacement. Tube leaks can happen anywhere, he said-in superheaters, reheaters, evaporators, economizers, preheaters-because of chemistry issues, flow-accelerated corrosion, under-deposit and dewpoint corrosion, poor fabrication weld quality, corrosion fatigue, and other causes. more
