2014 Western Turbine Users Conference (WTUI): Issue #3

Drop in LMS100 fleet availability YOY traced primarily to unrelated issues at two plants

In 2013, forced-outage factors (FOF) of 9.1% for LMS100 peaking units (service factors of less than 10%) and 5.6% for cycling units (service factors of from 10% up to 50%), both were well below comparable 2012 data and also below the average annual FOF for the last five years. Two unrelated events-the unavailability of replacement compressor blades for one unit and a bearing problem at another-accounted for nearly half of the fleet's forced-outage hours last year. Eliminating these two outliers from the data would bring the fleet's KPIs within the range of expectations. more

LM6000 coverage diverse: engine, I&C, operations, electrical, inspection, etc

The LM6000 track began with a review of fleet statistics and service bulletins and moved quickly into presentations on depot findings for 2013 that users should be aware of prior to onsite inspections and before sending engines out for overhaul. This material will be covered in the 2Q/2014 CCJ, based on notes provided by engineers from Strategic Power Systems Inc, Charlotte, who volunteer as the official session secretaries for WTUI. more

DCS replaces ageing PLC-based controls on four LM6000 peakers

The upgrade or replacement of ageing control systems is a topic of considerable interest among gas-turbine owner/operators, LM6000 users in particular. That engine, introduced two decades ago, has been equipped with several different controls solutions over the years; many in operation for five or more years require attention. Designing a control system for the LM6000 and other aero engines generally is considered a more challenging assignment than it is for most frame GTs and steam turbines. more
