Government Matters
January 20, 2015

The President will give the State of the Union this evening and the next two weeks will give you an opportunity to hear the state of economic development in our community and the state of the Chamber - and how chambers can drive business and community growth. Join us at our first Economic Development & Public Policy Committee of the year and our largest event of the year, the Chamber's Annual Meeting. The state of our community is strong, but we need you to resolve to stay involved!

TONIGHT: Hearing on Arts & Innovation Center
Tonight, the Carrboro Board of Aldermen will host a public hearing on a potential arts and innovation center. Two Chamber members, The ArtsCenter and Kidzu are bringing forth a proposal to build a 55,000 sq. ft. four story project that would include a children's museum, arts education learning environments, and performance and rehearsal spaces for our community's many performing arts organizations. As proposed, the new project would include outdoor learning environments including an amphitheater, a rooftop garden and community gathering spaces. Read more here, here, here, here, and here and weigh in with your thoughts either by emailing the Aldermen at boa@townofcarrboro.org or attending the public hearing 7:30 p.m. tonight!

Workforce Housing Workshops

The availability of workforce housing is an economic development issue, so that's why Town of Chapel Hill's economic development director Dwight Bassett is hosting a series of sessions on affordable housing in the Town of Chapel Hill. Housing and Community Executive Director Loryn Clark said the workshops will feature local and national experts in the housing field. "Our goal for this series of workshops is to think differently about our approach to increasing affordable housing opportunities in our community," she said. "Each session will help us gain a more comprehensive understanding of the Town's housing market. All of the sessions will be informative, and we are especially looking forward to the final session when we will suggest tools and strategies that are available to the Town to achieve the Council's affordable housing goals." Read about the first session and find out more and mark your calendar for the next three sessions!
