Government Matters
August 27, 2013
School is back in session! The Class of 2017 has taken their sips at the Old Well, and your kids are back in class (we can hear your sighs of relief over here). But not so fast; you can't relax yet. As a Chapel Hill-Carrboro business community member, there's still a lot of work to do. Brush up on your reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic, so we can start this school year off right. And as always, don't forget to save the date to advocate!
Reading: 2013 State of the Community Report

Did you attend this morning's State of the Community Report sponsored by the Triangle Community Foundation? Our CEO, Aaron Nelson, presented the report, the only one of its kind in the community, that tracks the well-being of Chapel Hill-Carrboro along social, economic, and environmental indicators. Read the report at our SlideShare account, view past reports (2010, 2011, 2012), and give us feedback on what you'd like to see next year! Also, thank you to the sponsors of our event: Triangle Community Foundation, the Greater Chapel Hill Association of REALTORS, PNC BANK, The UPS Store, and Courtyard Marriott!

'Riting: Reformatting the LUMO

The Town of Chapel Hill is embarking on a process to "revise and modernize the 10-year-old zoning and codes rulebook that guides and directs the development of land in Chapel Hill." We know that the Land Use Management Ordinance (LUMO) has a lot of problems, so this is our chance give feedback in hopes of improving and streamlining land use regulations. Attend the Council Work Session (Sept. 11), the LUMO Launch Event (Sept. 24) and/or Topic Stakeholder Meetings (Sept. 25 and Sept. 26). For more information, visit the Town's website, or let me know you want to be a part of changing these regulations.

'Rithmetic: Balancing the Tax Base

Most of you know that the Town of Chapel Hill and Orange County are behind our peers in percentage of commercial tax base, retail sales, and property tax revenue from commercial sources. Want to know the benefits of changing those numbers? Hear about "The Dollars and $ense: True Cost and Benefits of Development" from Joe Minicozzi and Chuck Marohn, noon (Chapel Hill Public Library) or 6 p.m. (Extraordinary Ventures), Wednesday, Sept. 18. This event is brought to you by the Town of Chapel Hill, Orange County, and the Chamber's Partnership for a Sustainable Community.

Register for Two Upcoming Events

Once you've brushed up on your reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic, register for two upcoming Chamber events to help your business stay informed and plan for the future. Learn about current and planned development projects at the Orange/Chatham Counties Development Briefing presented by Time Warner Cable Business Class,  7:30-9:30 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 11 at The Carolina Club. And come back to the Club 8:30-10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 26 for a Disaster Preparedness Seminar. The event is sponsored by SCORE Chapel Hill, The Carolina Club, and the Chamber, and we hope you'll join us for a free continental breakfast and important information about preparing your business.

Report from Raleigh

Last but certainly not least, the Chamber's Economic Development & Public Policy (EDPP) Committee is pleased to host representatives from the NC Chamber government affairs team, to get a recap from the most recent legislative session and hear more about Vision 2030. Join us for our next meeting, 8 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 5 at the Chamber's Louise Beck Properties Conference Room. Any Chamber member employee is welcome to attend the meetings held the first Thursday each month.
