Government Matters
April 23, 2013
It's important to keep tabs on community conversations so that we can ensure the business community is part of them.  But in addition to marking your calendar for some important meetings, we also want you to know about a couple of events where the business community can celebrate some exciting projects in downtown Chapel Hill.  Read all about it in this month's Government Matters.
At a crossroads

A group of citizens has been working on creating a small area plan for one of the most important crossroads in our community - Estes Drive and Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Now is your turn to weigh in: stop by the Community Drop-By Session for the Central West Focus Area from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in Meeting Room B of the Chapel Hill Public Library. The Town of Chapel Hill is soliciting public comments regarding the proposed Planning Principles for the area, which will serve as the basis for the development of a small area plan and are extremely important in deciding how this gateway area of the Town will develop - whether there will be retail space and what type, how it will relate to Carolina North, and the types and amount of density that will be allowed. Only 15 minutes of your time is needed to help make a very lasting impact on these critical decisions.

Breaking ground

You've were there to show your support. Now it's time to celebrate! You're invite to two celebrations: 140 West's Grand Opening and Bicycle Apartments groundbreaking. The entire community is invited to head downtown 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, April 26, and celebrate the completion of the redevelopment of Lot 5 by Chamber member RAM Realty. And 11:30 AM, Wednesday, May 8, we will celebrate the groundbreaking of Bicycle Apartments, a by-design student housing project by Chamber member Trinitas Ventures. We hope to see you at both celebrations of smart development downtown!

REALTORS - head to Raleigh

For our REALTOR members, join the 2013 Legislative Day, starting at 9 a.m., Wednesday, April 24 in the Legislative Auditorium of the General Assembly Building at 16 West Jones Street in Raleigh. In-person meetings with legislators will immediately follow the rally. It is extremely important to attend this year's event as GCHAR members will visit legislators in their offices and discuss issues significant to REALTORS and the real estate industry, including tax reform and the preservation of the state mortgage interest deduction.   Additional details can be found by visiting the NC Association of REALTORS website. REALTORS - Make sure your voice is heard in Raleigh!

The houses we build

Who lives in our community and where folks live have been hot topics in our community lately, but there are multiple conversations. Come to our Economic Development & Public Policy Committee, 8 a.m., Thursday, May 2 to hear a panel discussion on affordable and workforce housing, in an effort to bring these many different conversations under one roof (pun intended). Hear from speakers from Community Home Trust, Habitat for Humanity, Self Help, and both Towns. Help us strategize how we can house our workforce closer to our employment centers. We'll also hear an update about the NC NGN project, an effort to bring high speed internet to our community. Every member is always welcome at our monthly EDPP Committee meetings!
