Making a Difference

Each and every day our dedicated and passionate employees make a difference in the lives of our patients, visitors, and colleagues. We would like to highlight some of those stories. If you have a colleague you would like to recognize, please send the employee's name and how he or she made a difference to slhrounds@saint-lukes.org.

"The staff on East 9 recognized that one of our patients was in great need of some of life's basic essentials. The patient had been closely accompanied by her teenage son during her hospitalization, who has opened up to staff that they are homeless. The amazing staff have gone beyond their clinical obligation and opened their hearts to help this family out. This week the staff has brought in new clothing, shoes, school supplies, and hygiene items. The East 9 staff has adopted the family and hopes to get them off to a great start once the patient is feeling well enough to be discharged."

SLHS eHealth Tele-ICU program gets the University of Utah's attention

On Aug. 22, representatives from the University of Utah Telemedicine Department will be at SLHS to learn about Saint Luke's very successful eHealth program.

Lou Theurer, UUHC Telemedicine operations manager said, "When the University of Utah Medical Center decided to expand its telemedicine program to include multiple specialties, with connections to facilities throughout our area, we identified tele-ICU as a program that could bring great value to our vast and sparsely populated region. However, we recognized that tele-ICU programs have not been without controversy: cost, physician acceptance, logistics, and technical support are all critical components that must be engaged fully for a program to succeed. We identified other successful tele-ICU programs to study as an initial step in planning our own system. Saint Luke's Health System is widely recognized as a leader in this field, and their use of telemedicine both for internal ICU management and as a service to regional facilities is exactly the model that we would like to emulate."

This is not the first time the success of the SLHS telemedicine program has welcomed visitors who hope to learn from our experience. In fact, the Integris System from Oklahoma will be receiving a tour later this month.

Saint Luke's Hospice looking for volunteers

Saint Luke's Hospice is currently looking for new volunteers to serve in homes in the communities we serve and in our Saint Luke's Hospice House.

At Saint Luke's Hospice, we pride ourselves on helping patients and families live as fully as possible, so that each patient's final journey is filled with a rich sense of dignity. Hospice provides support and care for persons in the last phases of incurable disease to ensure a life of quality.

The volunteer opportunities for Saint Luke's Hospice are endless. Volunteers in the homes of our patients provide social support and respite to hospice patients and their families. For the Hospice House, we are looking for volunteers to provide top notch customer service at the reception desk, provide hospitality to the families who join us, and in both, volunteers who offer companionship, a listening ear, and a caring presence as a friendly visitor. Many of our volunteers also put their unique skills to use through complimentary therapies and other special projects such as arts and crafts, quilting, and photography.

If you are interested in becoming a Saint Luke's Hospice volunteer please contact:

Melissa Tinklepaugh at mtinklepaugh@saint-lukes.org or 816-502-8901 or Bruce Leisy at bleisy@saint-lukes.org or 816-360-8009.

Training program

The training program for in-home and Hospice House volunteers includes the following three evenings of instruction from 5:30 - 9 p.m.

A light dinner will be provided each evening.

  • Sept. 17
  • Sept. 19
  • Sept. 24

As a new volunteer you would have the opportunity to be part of a dedicated team devoted to continuously improving the quality of our patient care. In addition, you would have the wonderful opportunity to provide one-to-one support and caring that would bring comfort to the patients and families that we serve.
