Tere Herzog, R.N., receives DAISY Award for January

Tere Herzog, R.N. III, received the DAISY Award in recognition for her compassionate and caring nursing skills as an R.N. in the Cardiac ICU. The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease.
Herzog was nominated for the DAISY Award by a former patient's daughter. Her nomination states, "Tere was the nurse in ICU most of the time my father was at Saint Luke's. Tere not only took extraordinary care of my father but she also took care of my mother. She always made sure my mother and I understood what the doctors were saying and what steps they were taking to try to help him. Tere also went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed and anticipated items needed before we even asked. She was not the nurse in my father's room the day he passed away but someone must have told her because after he passed, Tere showed up in his room and comforted my mother. In the two weeks that we were there, you could tell Tere really cares about her job and the families she comes to know. We also found out that Tere sent her family on vacation without her so she could stay at work caring for my family. Everyone at Saint Luke's was very kind and caring to us. It was truly a different experience than I have encountered at other hospitals. I lost my father but I know everyone there did everything they could for him and I am thankful for that."
Herzog was educated at Southwest Baptist University in Bolliver, Mo., and graduated in 2004. She initially worked at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. She moved to Kansas City in 2010 where she started as a night shift nurse in the CICU.
On Jan. 14, the Nursing Recruitment and Retention Committee and the CICU staff surprised Herzog with this DAISY Award and a breakfast that included Cinnabon® Cinnamon Rolls. She also received the Healer's Touch sculpture, award certificate, DAISY pin, and a parking spot.
Congratulations to Herzog, who like so many Saint Luke's Hospital nurses, deserves a big thank you for her extraordinary and compassionate nursing care.

Heart healthy valentine
Delight your valentine with dark chocolate - a truly heartfelt treat! Dark chocolate contains antioxidant compounds called polyphenols. Polyphenols may help promote heart health in a variety of ways:
- Decreases inflammation
- Increases "good" cholesterol
- Protects against artery damage
Select a dark chocolate bar with a cocoa content of 70 percent or greater. This means the chocolate bar contains 70 percent (or more) cocoa bean components and 30 percent (or less) of other ingredients (mostly sugar or butter). The higher the percentage of cocoa, the less sweet the taste, but the more heart-healthy the benefits!
Dark chocolate is a preferred way to indulge your valentine, provided it is a part of his or her discretionary calories!
