Saint Luke's seeks qualified applicants for cardiovascular outcomes fellowships

T32 grant funding trains next generation of leaders in clinical and outcomes research

As one of the leading outcomes research centers in the nation, Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute has led more than 115 clinical trials in all aspects of cardiovascular disease. The Heart Institute, based in Kansas City, invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral training program in cardiovascular outcomes research. The T32 training program, funded by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute to the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), is hosted by the Mid America Heart Institute in close collaboration with the University of Kansas.

"There is a growing regional and national need for more scholars in cardiovascular outcomes and quality of care research," said John Spertus, M.D., Daniel J. Lauer/Missouri Endowed Chair and Professor at the UMKC School of Medicine and Clinical Director of Outcomes Research at Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute. "This fellowship provides curriculum, mentored research, and independent research experiences to train the next generation of leaders in the fields of cardiovascular clinical and outcomes research."

The program is designed to train young scholars in quantifying patients' outcomes, defining the determinants of these outcomes, comparing the effectiveness of alternative treatments, translating new knowledge into clinical care, and measuring and improving the quality of care.

Four SLHS pharmacists pass Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties Pharmacotherapy Board Exam

Four Saint Luke's Health System pharmacists took and passed the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties Pharmacotherapy Board Exam in October 2012. Those individuals are Lisa Williams, Pharm.D., pharmacist I, Saint Luke's North Hospital; Hilary Marks, Pharm.D., pharmacist I, Saint Luke's North Hospital;  Ryan Anderson, Pharm.D., pharmacist II, Saint Luke's Hospital; and Julie Welge, pharmacist I, Saint Luke's Hospital. Less than four percent of all U.S. pharmacists achieve Pharmacotherapy board-certification. Nearly one-third of Saint Luke's Health System pharmacists are now board-certified.

Pharmacotherapy is the area of pharmacy practice that is responsible for ensuring the safe, appropriate, and economical use of drugs in patient care. Pharmacotherapy specialists are responsible for direct patient care, function as members of multidisciplinary teams, and are frequently the primary source of drug information for other health care professionals. Those individuals who become certified may use the designation Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialists and the initials BCPS as credentials.

Handmade with Heart

While the red dress promotes awareness about women's heart disease, the red scarf symbolizes lifelines for women as a reminder that they are not alone in their battle with heart disease. The red scarf offers comfort, support, and encouragement for women with heart disease and becomes part of their healing journey.

You can make a difference in the lives of these women and help them celebrate heart month in style! Pull out your knitting needles or crochet hook, create a red scarf, and become an advocate for women's heart health at the same time. Scarves should be 5 - 8 inches wide, 48 - 60 inches long, and red.

Once you are finished with your creation, send your scarves with your name and contact information to the Muriel I. Kauffman Women's Heart Center. All scarves received by Feb. 28 will be entered into a drawing for one of the following offerings of the winner's choice: A bottle of Omega 3 Fish Oil or a Women's Heart Center Heart Wellness Package assessment.
