About MJYF
The mission of the Maynard Jackson Youth Foundation (MJYF) is to build the foundation for youth today to become leaders of tomorrow. Through the signature program, the Leadership Academy, metropolitan Atlanta high school students learn the skills and principles of leadership, critical thinking, entrepreneurship, community service, and how to prepare
for their continued
education and careers.
For 20 years, the Leadership Academy has trained hundreds of metro Atlanta youth.
One hundred percent of the Leadership Academy alumni have the opportunity to attend college. The 20th Leadership Academy class is currently in session with 31 high school juniors from 9 high schools in the Metro Atlanta, South Fulton, and Clayton County areas - our largest class to date. We also have 25 high school seniors from our 2011 Leadership Academy class
that we are continuing
to work with as they
prepare for college.

 Greetings from the Co-Chairs
Dear Friends:
This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the Maynard Jackson Youth Foundation (MJYF) - a leadership program founded by Maynard to provide a Foundation for the Future for youth in metro Atlanta. Maynard was a tireless advocate for youth and he believed that with the right skills and tools, any young person could become a great leader. We still believe in Maynard's vision and have taken the torch to continue the work he began. To honor this milestone, MJYF is excited to host our fundraising gala -- Ignite! 2012. The celebration -- which is taking place on Friday, August 24, 2012 at the Woodruff Arts Center -- is slated to be an amazing event right here in the city Maynard loved so much.
Through this Ignite! Newsletter, we will keep you informed on the plans and details for our fundraising event and ways you can get involved. We also hope to gain many new friends and supporters of MJYF. All proceeds from Ignite! will be used to benefit our students.
Like Maynard, we recognize that there are so many amazing youth right in our own back yards. They have the spark of leadership but just need someone to help ignite it within them. Many face various personal or financial challenges in their lives and often times just a small amount can truly make all the difference. That's why MJYF is here and what Ignite! 2012 is all about. Thank you in advance for your support of Ignite! 2012 and for joining us to celebrate "20 years of Inspiring Leadership."

MJYF Leadership Academy in Action...

This has been another exciting year for MJYF. We selected our 20th Leadership Academy class with 31 high school juniors - our largest class to date - and continued working with our 25 high school seniors from our 2011 class as they prepared for college. Our seniors have now graduated from high school and are off to continue their educational pursuits this fall.
Here are some of the highlights from this year...

Etiquette Luncheon With A Legendary Event

|
|
For the second year, the MJYF Leadership Academy students participated in an Etiquette Luncheon hosted by Tony Conway and his event planning team at A Legendary Event. Tony and his team were the consummate hosts as they rolled out the red carpet for the students with a wonderful sit-down meal. They led the students through each course of the meal and provided etiquette tips along the way. The event is one of the highlights for the students each year and MJYF looks forward to continuing the partnership with A Legendary Event for years to come.
Fashion & Personal Imaging Seminar at Jeffrey Atlanta

As a reward for months of hard work in their Leadership Academy classes, some of the MJYF students enjoyed an afternoon of fashion and fellowship at Jeffrey Atlanta. The workshop, "Fashion & Personal Imaging", provided students with valuable tips on selecting appropriate and flattering attire for every occasion. Don Purcell & Leslie Scott of Jeffrey Atlanta generously offered valuable fashion advice as well as the use of their beautiful shop at Phipps Plaza. Celebrity Stylist, Patrick Cooper, gave the students useful tips on how to build a wardrobe of beautiful looks at an affordable price. Some of Atlanta's most accomplished and fashionable women were paired with an MJYF student, based upon their shared interests, to enjoy the seminar and get to know each other. The day was capped off by a delicious lunch at Davio's Northern Italian Steakhouse.

MJYF and the 100 Black Men Conference
Several of our young men were invited to participate in the 26th Annual 100 Black Men of America, Inc. Conference in Atlanta last month. The students joined the members for their Salute to Youth Luncheon and participated in the workshop, "Exploring Pathways to Entrepreneurship." During the session, the young men heard from accomplished entrepreneurs who shared elements of success (including hard work, persistence, and relationship building) as well as the pathways they each took to achieve success as business owners. Following the workshop, the students had the opportunity to dialogue with 100 Black Men Chairman Emeritus, Thomas W. Dortch, Jr.

Annual Educational Field Trip/College Tour

From June 25 - June 29, 2012, the students and staff of MJYF traveled to Washington, DC for the Annual Trip/College Tour. The first stop was Raleigh/Durham, NC for a visit to several colleges (Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, and NC Central). Once they arrived in DC, they had a full schedule ahead - campus visits to Howard and Georgetown, seeing the monuments (the first time seeing the MLK Memorial as a group), lunch at Ben's Chili Bowl, visits to the Smithsonian Museums, a tour of the Capitol, and a special visit with Congressman John Lewis. On the way back to Atlanta, the group stopped by Bennett and NC A & T. Not only did the students get the opportunity to travel, they also learned valuable information to help them prepare for college.

Thanks to the continued support of our MJYF Friends and with the proceeds from Ignite! 2012, we look forward to many more wonderful years of providing a Foundation for the Future for our students.
