Helping Families in Crisis

On November 11-18, Mother Bear CAN will join mental health care reformers and visionaries for an invitational summit on Alternative Approaches to Psychosis being convened at Esalen's Center for Theory and Research.

We are excited to have the opportunity to work with individuals and organizations who are are transforming the way we care for each other when we are at our most vulnerable.

We will be focusing on developing initiatives to help families in crisis find safe, effective and compassionate care that promotes full recovery for the whole family.

Dear Friends and Families,

This month families across the United States will gather together to give thanks, to celebrate and to remember the importance of nourishing families, friends and community.

Thanksgiving can also be a stressful time, particularly for families facing a mental health challenge. The pressure to keep up appearances, to keep up with traditions, to keep up period can be overwhelming.

The good news is that full recovery is possible, particularly when families receive education and support.

In this month's newsletter, you can learn more about how Mother Bear Community Action Network defines recovery and how we are helping families achieve it.

With gratitude,

Lisbeth Riis Cooper

What Are We Recovering From?

This Fall we had World Mental Health Day, Mental Illness Awareness Week, National Wellness Week and Recovery Month. Lots of ways to raise awareness about the same thing. But do we mean the same thing?

There are those who question whether recovery is a useful concept or whether it is overused, co-opted or simply not an accurate way to describe the process of learning to work with and through emotional distress and mental health challenges.

We grappled with these same concerns. Early on, we asked ourselves,

"What are families recovering from?"

Online Family Recovery Education

We are currently piloting an 8-week online family recovery program that includes family-centered mental health education, interactive facilitated support, and family recovery tools.

We are partnering with the Family Outreach and Response Program in Toronto to deliver this innovative wellness- and strengths-based education to families around the world.

Our online family recovery courses will officially launch in early 2013. Stay tuned for more details and registration information.
