A Garage Sale Thank You!
By Arleen Brilliant, Ris Routenberg and Sharon Wohl

As co-chairs of the garage sale that was held on September 6 and 7, we want to thank all of our members who donated their treasures, as well as everyone who worked so hard to make it successful.

Thank you to our volunteers, including:  Susan Axelrod, Linda Birnby, Olga Borodulin, Mike & Rachelle Brilliant, Naomi Bristol, Jill Bucinell, Hillary Fink, Randy and Rob Fox, Ruth Fraster, Ellin Friedman, Andy Gavens, Edith Kliman, Howard Kohn, Bos, Daniel & Ari Korevaar, Bette Kraut, Judy Kraut, Sam Lefkowitz, Fran Madison, Arlene Mendelson, Richard & Lois Mendelson, Anita Merims, Barbara & Alan Miller, Beth Nevins, Gary Reich, Larry Routenberg, Alice Rubenfeld, Judith Ruthberg, Marilyn Sofer, Roberta Steiner, Ruth Talmon, Barbara Wasser, Sylvia Winer, Allison, Mitchell and Howard Wohl, Linda Woodward-Stein, and Ann Zonderman.

Thank you to our staff - Barbara, Jack, Jim and Tio - for their support.
A special thanks to the Men's Club for schlepping up the racks and hangers from the basement, and to Howard Wohl for returning them at the end of the sale.

Thanks also to everyone who brought in and sorted their donations. Sorting donations when you drop them off is a tremendous help.  Together, our hard work earned about $4,000.

Cemetery Beautification Update

The following article comes from remarks made during Rosh Hashanah services by Mark and Jeffrey Handelman, co-chairs of the cemetery beautification fundraising committee.

Shanah Tova!  Nearly everyone here has a loved one, close friend or congregant they knew well who is buried in the sacred ground of the Agudat Achim cemetery in Rotterdam.
Two years ago the synagogue's Board of Trustees approved the demolition of the chapel that had stood in the cemetery for many years. Years of disuse, neglect and vandalism took its toll on the structure.  At the time, Eric Moses spearheaded a fundraising effort to fund the first phase of the cemetery beautification project.

A beautification committee, chaired by Don Steiner, worked diligently with architect Mike Roth to design plans for a meditation garden where the chapel once stood.  The plans were approved by the Board of Trustees, and a contractor was selected after a competitive bidding process.

We are co-chairing a major fundraising initiative to complete the meditation garden and other cemetery beautification projects. To date, we have approximately $200,000 donated toward a goal of $500,000.

Other projects to be funded include:
    • Installation of an interfaith burial section
    • Resurfacing of all walkways in the cemetery
    • New perimeter fencing and repairs to the gates
    • Replacement of perimeter trees
    • Improved lighting & security
Today we are not here to solicit the congregation, but to bring you up to speed on progress at the cemetery.  When the time comes, we ask that you dig deep and make a truly meaningful pledge to the Agudat Achim cemetery beautification and restoration campaign.

We are very excited to announce that we recently received word of a challenge donation.  If we raise $400,000 in our cemetery campaign, a donor has promised to fund the final $100,000.  If you know anyone with loved ones buried in the cemetery but who is no longer affiliated with our congregation who might want to participate in our fundraising endeavor, please provide us or the synagogue office with their contact information.  Thank you very much.  We look forward to continuing this fundraising endeavor with your support.

Thank you to all who have contributed to this very important fundraising campaign so far.  Click here to see photos of progress that has already been made at the cemetery.

Renovation of our Cemetery has Begun!
by Allan Pearlman

The first phase of the renovation will consist of an expansion of the existing cemetery, creation of an interfaith section and the construction of a meditation garden. The expansion of the grave sites has already been completed while the meditation garden will be completed in early November. Further improvements to cemetery will include road paving, new fencing, the addition of benches and new hedges. These improvements will be made as soon as fundraising efforts are completed.

37th Carrot Festival a Huge Success!
By Hillary Fink

Our 37th annual Carrot Festival was held on October 11, and I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support in making it the success that it was!  Whether you were on the committee, you shopped and/or schlepped, you cooked and/or baked, you helped with set-up on Saturday night, you volunteered on the day of the Festival, or you came to the Festival with your family and friends - anything that you did to contribute to our success is greatly appreciated.

While I would love to list each volunteer who helped at any given time, I don't want to risk leaving a name off the list.  Please know that all your efforts are greatly appreciated!  I would, however, like to single out the committee, who works tirelessly throughout the year.  Kudos to:  Jill Bucinell, Steve Cohen, Randy Fox, Sara Gavens, Aviva Hallenstein, Anita Merims, Jack Mintzer, Howie Mittleman, Ris Routenberg, Jackie Rowen, Linda Shapiro, Sharon Wohl and Linda Woodward-Stein.

To celebrate our fabulous day, please join us for our annual Carrot Festival Shabbat on November 7.  In addition to honoring all of our volunteers, the annual Carrot Award will be presented.  Please save the date!

I hope that you enjoyed the great articles and photos that appeared on the front page in The Jewish World (October 15) and the Daily Gazette (October 12). Please click here for photos and feel free to share photos that you took on our Facebook page or by e-mailing them to Jack.
